Illustration by Paterne Berrichon, ca. 1890s.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Inspired by Rimbaud\u2014\u201cwho essentially believed a poet had to descend into the depths of all that was bad and report back\u201d\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/nypost.com\/2015\/01\/12\/no-one-believed-this-former-professor-would-rob-a-bank\/\" target=\"_blank\">an MIT visual arts and film professor held up a bank in Chinatown<\/a>. \u201cI stood outside the bank talking into the camera for quite a while \u2026 going over the different reasons to do it and not to do it.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the mid-nineteenth century, on the other hand, <a href=\"http:\/\/laphamsquarterly.org\/roundtable\/post-secrets?utm_content=buffer4b0f8&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">women were scarcely allowed to visit the post office<\/a>, which was \u201cfrequently made rendezvous for interdirected communication and illicit pleasures.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>But today, in the age of big data, <a href=\"http:\/\/iasc-culture.org\/THR\/channels\/THR\/2015\/01\/art-for-datas-sake\/\" target=\"_blank\">everyone is welcome in museums\u2014especially if you bring your smartphone<\/a>. \u201cFrom the minute you enter the building\u2014<em>before<\/em>, if you bought tickets online\u2014you are also contributing\u00a0personal information\u00a0to the museum\u2019s newly minted \u2018engagement\u2019 department. Don\u2019t be surprised if, while you linger in front of a Caravaggio, a coupon for a cappuccino in the museum caf\u00e9 pops up on your phone \u2026 When data mining turns a museum into a frequent-flier program, the result is commerce, not culture.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1966, a British magazine illustrator went on the set of <em>2001<\/em> and drew what he saw. \u201cKubrick [wanted] illustrated production stills of what happened on his set, rather than having a photographer take noisy\u00a0and distracting photographs.\u00a0The illustrations \u2026 would then be sent out\u00a0in press kits to publications and other media outlets that could promote the film.\u201d None of his images were published at the time, but now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/01\/illustrated-production-stills-from-kubricks-2001-a-space-odyssey.html\" target=\"_blank\">you can see them here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t just judge a
