Courtesy of the artist and Marianne Boesky Gallery, New York<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Michel Houellebecq has announced that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/jan\/09\/michel-houellebecq-stops-promotion-novel-charlie-hebdo-attack\" target=\"_blank\">he\u2019s stopped promoting his new novel in the wake of the <em>Charlie Hebdo<\/em> attack<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/adapting-nabokov?intcid=mod-latest\" target=\"_blank\">A history of Nabokov in adaptation<\/a>: \u201cFilmmakers have mined all of Nabokov\u2019s movie-friendly novels \u2026 But the adaptation I\u2019m still waiting for is <em>Pale Fire<\/em>, which pretty much everyone agrees is unfilmable.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Who among us hasn\u2019t thought long and hard about \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/09\/theater\/dying-for-it-adapted-from-a-banned-soviet-era-satire.html?partner=rss&amp;emc=rss&amp;smid=nytimesarts\" target=\"_blank\">what might have tickled the funny bones of folks suffering under Stalinism<\/a>\u201d? <em>The Suicide<\/em>, a 1928 play by Nikolai Erdman, was apparently so funny that Soviet authorities forbade it from being staged until 1982, ten years after its author had died. Now the play has been adapted for contemporary Western audiences, but \u201cthis bleakly comic portrait of desperate lives in Soviet Russia feels wheezy and labored, ultimately about as much fun as a winter holiday in Siberia. (Grim footnote: Mr. Erdman was exiled there after being arrested on political grounds in 1933.)\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On John Waters, who has a new show at Marianne Boesky Gallery: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wnyc.org\/story\/inflammatory-art-cartoons\/\" target=\"_blank\">He is the only funny conceptual artist I can think of<\/a>. He is\u2014like the cartoonists at <em>Charlie Hebdo<\/em>\u2014a rude satirist who sends up the absurdities of American culture, in particular our obsession with fame and eternal youth.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cBitcoin may well be the world\u2019s worst-performing currency. In 2014 it lost more than half of its value against the dollar, beating even Ukraine\u2019s hryvnia and the Russian rouble. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/business-books-quarterly\/21638093-rise-and-fall-crypto-currency-good-news-authors-least-much\" target=\"_blank\">But measured by the number of new books it has inspired<\/a>, bitcoin is top of the pile. Nearly 200 titles about the crypto-currency came out last year, according to Amazon.
