Andy Weir\u2019s <em>The Martian<\/em>, once a self-published e-book, has found a wide readership because of its attention to technical specifics: \u201cAn astronaut gets left behind on Mars in a near-future <small>NASA<\/small> mission, and has to survive until help comes. This he does through physics and chemistry, algebra and pipe fitting, botany and celestial navigation, all described in meticulous detail, some of it even simulated with software that Weir wrote himself.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The descent of the English department\u2014why do outsiders so commonly regard it as \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vqronline.org\/nonfiction-criticism\/2015\/01\/loving-literature\" target=\"_blank\">a bastion of muddled thinking<\/a>\u201d?
