In other words, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/05\/business\/media\/popular-tv-series-and-movies-maintain-relevance-as-novels.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">why write a novel when you can write a novelization<\/a>? \u201cFor publishers, tie-in books have become cash cows that offer instant brand recognition and access to huge fan bases for vastly larger media \u2026 \u2018Sometimes I meet writers who are like, \u201cWhy are you doing this?\u201d but I would be betraying who I am if I said I\u2019m never going to do this again because it\u2019s beneath me as an artist \u2026 I combat the idea that these can\u2019t be good novels.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Breaking: some hooligan has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-mark-twain-grave-marker-stolen-20150105-story.html?track=rss&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;dlvrit=717819\" target=\"_blank\">made off with the bronze plaque<\/a> that hangs on Mark Twain\u2019s grave marker in Elmira, New York. Authorities have ensured that it\u2019s not on eBay.<\/li>\n<li>Our literary critics have become less egotistical over the decades\u2014have they also lost the touch? \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-New-Modesty-in-Literary\/150993\/\" target=\"_blank\">Literary critics have become more subdued<\/a>, adopting methods with less grand speculation, more empirical study, and more use of statistics or other data. They aim to read, describe, and mine data rather than make \u2018interventions\u2019 of world-historical importance.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> has done something of an about-face, too, if you look at its history. \u201cThat it has become such a celebratory document of the upper class is one of <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>\u2019s ironies,\u201d but the early iteration of the magazine, edited by Frank Crowninshield, \u201csought to break something. <a href=\"http:\/\/penguinrandomhouse.ca\/hazlitt\/feature\/heres-more-incredulous-age\" target=\"_blank\">Its initial sharpness drove at some kind of point other than the enjoyment of fine food and clothing<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.printmag.com\/typography\/aaron-burns-typography-lessons-from-the-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rediscovered credos on typography from a 1964 issue of <em>Print<\/em> magazine<\/a>: \u201cIs the typographer a prophet or a propagator of a new faith?
