Le Guin defends genre fiction<\/a>: \u201cWhen the characteristics of a genre are controlled, systematized, and insisted upon by publishers, or editors, or critics, they become limitations rather than possibilities \u2026 I love to remember Edmund Wilson, king of the realist bigots, squealing \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jrrvf.com\/sda\/critiques\/The_Nation.html\" target=\"_blank\">Oo, those awful Orcs!<\/a>\u2019 and believing he\u2019d made a witty and cogent critical point.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2015\/01\/05\/pulps-big-moment?mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">The sordid history of the paperback<\/a>, which democratized and scandalized: \u201cWhen we look back on the mass-market-paperback phenomenon it\u2019s hard to keep the Emily Bront\u00ebs separate from the Mickey Spillanes. In the same year that Signet published <em>I, the Jury<\/em>, it also published reprints of books by James Joyce, William Faulkner, Thomas Wolfe, and Arthur Koestler. Paperback publishers made no effort to distinguish classics from kitsch.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Where does zero come from? A mathematician <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/01\/03\/374737120\/the-zig-zagging-history-of-the-number-zero?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=books&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_term=artsculture\" target=\"_blank\">traced the earliest-known written representation of the numeral<\/a> to a seventh-century tablet in Cambodia: \u201cIt was important to recover this artifact with the earliest zero \u2026 there\u2019s a monument to this great invention of the human mind, the ability to write something down that represents complete nothingness.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A new year, a new occasion to police language. Presenting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lssu.edu\/banished\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lake Superior State University\u2019s fortieth annual list of banished words<\/a>, including <em>curate<\/em>, <em>skill set<\/em>, <em>takeaway<\/em>, and others you\u2019d sooner cut your ears off than hear again. (It\u2019s worth revisiting the lists from years past\u2014in \u201998, for instance, people were sick of <em>da bomb<\/em>, <em>talk to the hand<\/em>, and <em>yadda yadda yadda<\/em>.)<\/li>\n<li>And while we\u2019re on words: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/special-report\/21635759-why-luxury-so-hard-pin-down-rose-many-names\" target=\"_blank\">What exactly is <em>luxury<\/em><\/a>? The concept is both slippery and divisive \u2026 The language associated with it is replete with qualifiers. It can be \u2018authentic,\u2019 \u2018absolute,\u2019 \u2018aspirational\u2019 or \u2018affordable\u2019 \u2026 The acquisition of luxury is both an attempt at transcendence and an act of appropriation, like the picking of the apple in the garden of Eden.
