Now he\u2019s recorded a spoken-word version in \u201cAmiri\u2019s Green Chim Chim-knees Growth Tribe,\u201d part of a tribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/poetry\/3274\/pres-spoke-in-a-language-amiri-baraka\">Amiri Baraka<\/a> to be released next year by Heroes Are Gang Leaders. Give it a listen above.<\/p>\n<p>After Baraka died in January, Ellis and his frequent collaborator James Brandon Lewis formed Heroes Are Gang Leaders, a group of poets and musicians. They recorded the album over three\u00a0six-hour sessions. Ellis calls it \u201ca signifying groove head-nod to Mr. Baraka,\u201d influenced by Thelonious Monk and A Tribe Called Quest.<\/p>\n<p>The text of \u201cPolo Goes to the Moon\u201d is below. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><small>POLO GOES TO THE MOON<\/small><\/p>\n<p><em>for Reggie Burwell<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s been<br \/>a lot of talk,<br \/>lately, as to whether<br \/>or not America<br \/>actually went<br \/>to the moon.<br \/>The non-believers<br \/>say there\u2019s no<br \/>weather in space<br \/>\u2014no humidity, no wind, no rain,<br \/>only empty pockets<br \/>and crank shapes.<br \/>Craters, big ass<br \/>asteroids, black holes.<br \/>They say waving<br \/>our arms, all at once,<br \/>is as false as the flag<br \/>and We, the people, percussively agree:<br \/>Astronaut-Bouncing<br \/>looks jive-phony, unless,<br \/>of course, you think of the moon<br \/>as a snare drum<br \/>\u2014half, eclipsed, full,<br \/>and consider, as Polo did,<br \/>the percussive<br \/>nature of gravity,<br \/>the forcible way the earth,<br \/>like a party, pulls<br \/>a body, every body<br \/>back to it \u2026 every time<br \/>some symbol crashes<br \/>or the rototoms,<br \/>like satellites,<br \/>get too-hype and someone<br \/>jumps up, as Polo did,<br \/>beyond the<br \/>regular \u201clock\u201d of<br \/>solar system<br \/>like a short, well-barbered<br \/>meteor, hurled<br \/>into the divine orbit<br \/>of coma \u2026 beyond the limitations<br \/>of all things earthly,<br \/>including the notion<br \/>of nation, and its local,<br \/>ingrown extension: going National.<br \/>The whole time<br \/>Polo was in the air,<br \/>he was in total control<br \/>of his own ounce<br \/>of lunar sleep,<br \/>replacing the handcuffs<br \/>around Saturn<br \/>with open hi-hats.<br \/>The whole time<br \/>he was on<br \/>life support,<br \/>alphabetized,<br \/>removing vowels.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heroes Are Gang Leaders:<\/em><br \/><em>Thomas Sayers Ellis, Poet<\/em><br \/><em>James Brandon Lewis, Saxophone<\/em><br \/><em>Luke Stewart, Bass<\/em><br \/><em>Ryan Frazier, Trumpet<\/em><br \/><em>Janice Lowe, Piano<\/em><br \/><em>Warren \u201cTrae\u201d Crudup, Drums<\/em><br \/><em>The question \u201cVowels?\u201d asked at the end by Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thomas Sayers Ellis\u2019s poem \u201cPolo Goes to the Moon\u201d\u2014an elegy for the bounce-beat go-go music pioneer Reggie Burwell\u2014appeared in The Paris Review No. 209 earlier this year.
