The <em>Trip Generation Manual<\/em>, a commonly consulted urban-planning guide, \u201cmay overestimate the number of trips generated from a new development by as much as 55 percent\u2014\u2018phantom trips\u2019 \u2026 The result is that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citylab.com\/cityfixer\/2014\/12\/a-widely-used-planning-manual-tends-to-recommend-building-far-more-roads-than-needed\/383759\/\" target=\"_blank\">cities may build way more roads than necessary<\/a>, perpetuating sprawl and leaving less street space for non-drivers in the process.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Our editor Lorin Stein is judging <em>Nowhere Magazine<\/em>\u2019s travel-writing contest\u2014they\u2019re \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nowherepublishing.submittable.com\/submit\/16985\" target=\"_blank\">looking for\u00a0young, old, novice and veteran voices to send us stories\u00a0that possess\u00a0a powerful\u00a0sense of place<\/a>.\u201d First prize is a thousand dollars and submissions are due January 1.<\/li>\n<li><em>Secret Behavior<\/em> is a new magazine about \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2014\/12\/secret-behavior-is-a-sex-mag-for-the-sensitive.html?mid=twitter_nymag\" target=\"_blank\">what intimacy looks like<\/a>\u201d: \u201cThe first issue, which explored anonymity, is full of emotional money shots: self-portraits of men\u2019s feet when they climax from masturbation (paired with their responses to the artist\u2019s wanted ad), breakup fiction by Catherine Lacey, Jesper Fabricius\u2019s anatomical encyclopedia made from close-cropped pornography.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A few months ago, John Paul Rollert wrote a piece for the <em>Daily <\/em>about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2014\/10\/08\/the-will-to-believe\/\" target=\"_blank\">an Ayn Rand conference in Vegas<\/a>. Now he\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2014\/12\/meeting-ayn-rand-on-the-las-vegas-strip\/383608\/?single_page=true\" target=\"_blank\">reported more on it in <em>The Atlantic<\/em><\/a>: \u201cEscapism is the allure of Las Vegas. The city\u2014with its shows, its clubs, even its casinos\u2014is ultimately incidental. You come to leave your self behind. Escapism of a different sort is also the allure of a radical philosophy. It seduces not by promising a temporary solution to the contest between the grosser passions and personal integrity \u2026 but by providing an alternative vision of what the \u2018real world\u2019 constitutes.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>With his album <em>Pom Pom<\/em>, Ariel Pink has delivered some of the best pop music of 2014: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bombmagazine.org\/article\/66311211\/ariel-pink\" target=\"_blank\">It all seems to speak to people in that world, all these aged tweens<\/a>,\u201d he said in an interview: \u201cEverybody still thinks they\u2019re a tween, but they\u2019re not. They\u2019re former tweens. Generation tweens \u2026 the new twelve-year-olds pop up and usurp the former twelve-year-olds\u2019 hegemony. That\u2019s what I love about the music industry. It\u2019s run by these kids.
