{"id":80778,"date":"2014-12-12T09:30:48","date_gmt":"2014-12-12T14:30:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=80778"},"modified":"2014-12-12T11:29:16","modified_gmt":"2014-12-12T16:29:16","slug":"the-original-futurologists-and-other-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2014\/12\/12\/the-original-futurologists-and-other-news\/","title":{"rendered":"The Original Futurologists, and Other News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_80780\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/whale-submarine_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80780\" class=\"wp-image-80780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/whale-submarine_3.jpg\" alt=\"whale-submarine_3\" width=\"600\" height=\"343\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-80780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From a set of French nineteenth-century postcards depicting what we thought we&#8217;d be doing in the year 2000.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Isn\u2019t it time for the <em>New York Times <\/em>to abandon its senselessly decorous policy on obscenity? \u201cAmerica\u2019s newspaper of record has a habit of relying on euphemism to shield its subscribers\u2019 delicate sensibilities, as if <em>Times <\/em>readers are all wealthy dowagers prone to fainting spells at the merest suggestion that human beings have sex or excrete waste \u2026 We\u2019re all adults here. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/life\/culturebox\/2014\/12\/new_york_times_profanity_policy_what_s_more_important_to_the_paper_of_record.2.html\" target=\"_blank\">Reading a dirty word in the newspaper won\u2019t scandalize anyone<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/aeon.co\/magazine\/society\/how-the-victorians-imagined-and-invented-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Victorians invented the future<\/a> as we know it, insofar as it was only in the nineteenth century that we began to imagine a future that could be radically different from our present. \u201cAs new attitudes towards progress, shaped by the relationship between technology and society, started coming together \u2026 people started thinking about the future as a different place, or an undiscovered country\u2014an idea that seems so familiar to us now that we often forget how peculiar it actually is.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And the Victorians <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/booksblog\/2014\/dec\/11\/biography-victorian-values-modern-lives-19th-century-form\" target=\"_blank\">invented our concept of the biography<\/a>, too; it could do with some shaking up. \u201cBiography seems remarkably consistent. There is a deep similarity between those worthy (and often fascinating) nineteenth-century volumes \u2026 and the contemporary biographies \u2026 Why hasn\u2019t biography been as daring as the novel?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Peter Funch\u2019s stunning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/project\/portfolio\/mt-bakers-shrinking-glaciers?mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">photographs of Mount Baker<\/a> re-create decades-old postcards, illustrating how the landscape has changed: \u201cAlthough imperceptible, each photograph has a narrative.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frieze.com\/issue\/article\/the-sun-on-your-face\/\" target=\"_blank\">An interview with Laure Prouvost<\/a>: \u201cI know I\u2019m never going to fully grasp life in my art. It\u2019s never as good as having the sun on your face.
