Image via Slate<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cTime and again we hear about a new desire for the real, about a realism which is realistic set against an avant-garde which isn\u2019t, and so on \u2026 It seems to me meaningless, or at least unproductive, to discuss such things unless, to borrow a formulation from the \u2018realist\u2019 writer Raymond Carver, we first ask what we talk about when we talk about the real. Perhaps we should have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v36\/n24\/tom-mccarthy\/writing-machines\" target=\"_blank\">another look at the terms \u2018the real,\u2019 \u2018reality\u2019 and \u2018realism.\u2019<\/a>\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2014\/dec\/09\/david-lynch-bad-thoughts\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Lynch\u2019s paintings and drawings<\/a>: \u201cLynch has long been the American director with the most direct pipeline to his unconscious\u2014his graphic work suggests the doodles of an extravagantly disturbed child \u2026 The implied or explicit subject of these paintings is often arson, rape, or murder, but in Lynch\u2019s work, merely existing is a violent affair.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/future_tense\/2014\/12\/09\/_2014_in_photos_the_year_s_best_satellite_images_from_digitalglobe.html\" target=\"_blank\">The year in satellite images<\/a>: snapshots from DigitalGlobe\u2019s WorldView-2 and WorldView-3 satellites captured erupting volcanoes, protests, melting glaciers, music festivals, and, most chillingly, wildfires\u2014from 480 miles up, a landscape on fire looks more like it\u2019s covered in blood.<\/li>\n<li>Slava Polunin is Russia\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2014\/12\/slava-polunin\" target=\"_blank\">best-known artistic clown<\/a>,\u201d and now he\u2019s taking his act on the road. \u201cHis reaction to events, he insists, is best seen in his portrayal of the human condition \u2026 He thinks Samuel Beckett \u2018had the human condition about right, but there is no need to be miserable about that.\u2019 Audiences watch a mime character preparing for suicide with a noose\u2014and end up cheering a finale involving a ticker-tape storm and giant colored balls, against a haunting, electronic soundscape.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIn a poll conducted by <em>Variety<\/em> in August, <a href=\"http:\/\/penguinrandomhouse.ca\/hazlitt\/longreads\/kids-kids-not-long\" target=\"_blank\">the five most influential celebrities among Americans age thirteen to eighteen were all YouTube stars<\/a>. Ryan Higa, KSI, Smosh, Jenna Marbles, and other YouTubers with equally absurd names were all more popular than notable old person Leonardo DiCaprio. The highest-ranking movie star, Jennifer Lawrence, lagged well behind someone named\u00a0PewDiePie, a Swedish twenty-five-year-old who films himself cracking jokes while playing video games. His videos have been seen more than 6.5\u00a0<em>billion <\/em>times, making his the most viewed channel of all time\u2014bigger than Beyonc\u00e9, bigger than
