{"id":80674,"date":"2014-12-09T17:22:57","date_gmt":"2014-12-09T22:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=80674"},"modified":"2014-12-09T17:22:57","modified_gmt":"2014-12-09T22:22:57","slug":"new-yorks-first-daily-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2014\/12\/09\/new-yorks-first-daily-newspaper\/","title":{"rendered":"New York\u2019s First Daily Newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here\u2019s the front page of the inaugural edition of the <em>American Minerva<\/em> (\u201cPatroness of Peace, Commerce and the Liberal Arts\u201d), New York\u2019s first daily newspaper, published on December 9, 1793, from Wall Street, \u201cnearly opposite <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tontine_Coffee_House\" target=\"_blank\">the Tontine Coffee House<\/a>.\u201d It aimed to contain \u201cthe earliest intelligence, collected from the most authentic sources,\u201d and it\u2019s full of those long <i>s<\/i>\u00a0letterforms (<em>\u017f<\/em>) that look like lowercase <em>f<\/em>s and were by then not long for this world.<\/p>\n<p>Its editor was Noah Webster, a Federalist who wanted to discourage the French influence in the U.S. His first \u201caddress to the public\u201d covered nearly the entire front page. (Must\u2019ve been a slow news day.) \u201cNewspapers,\u201d he wrote,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>from their cheapness, and the frequency and rapidity of their circulation, may, in America, assume an eminent rank in the catalog of useful publications in a great degree, supersede the use of Magazines and Pamphlets. The public mind in America, roused by the magnitude of political events and impatient of delay, cannot wait for\u00a0<em>monthly<\/em> intelligence. <em>Daily<\/em> or at furthest <em>weekly<\/em>\u00a0communications are found necessary to gratify public curiosity.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The <em>American Minerva<\/em> ran for 744 issues between 1793 and 1796. It was bought out and eventually became the <em>New York Sun<\/em>, which was around until 1950. <!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80675\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption
