The local specialty is meat pies. Outside the pub a poster shows Uncle Sam holding out a pie, with the slightly Big Brotherish message: \u2018We want you to eat more pies.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAdrift on warm currents, no longer of this world, she became aware of him gliding into her \u2026 The universe was in her and with each movement it unfolded to her. Somewhere in the night a stray rocket went off.\u201d The long-awaited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/dec\/03\/ben-okri-wins-bad-sex-award-rocket-the-age-of-magic\" target=\"_blank\">winner of this year\u2019s Bad Sex in Fiction Award<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A bunch of prominent scholars are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/newstopics\/howaboutthat\/11257064\/Shakespearean-scholars-clash-over-gay-bard.html\" target=\"_blank\">bickering about the possibility that Shakespeare was gay<\/a>. \u201cSuch figments of the critic\u2019s imagination not only produce quantities of waste paper but \u2026 are inimical to the proper reading of poetry,\u201d one wrote.<\/li>\n<li>And while we\u2019re being litigious: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/02\/books\/maurice-sendaks-estate-debating-where-the-things-go.html?ref=books\" target=\"_blank\">the Maurice Sendak estate is embroiled in a debate about his will<\/a>, which stipulates that his house in Ridgefield, Connecticut\u2014where, two years after his death, his slippers still sit next to his bed\u2014become a study center and museum. \u201cI really don\u2019t know who\u2019s going to go there,\u201d his longtime British editor said. \u201cIt\u2019s in the middle of nowhere.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A new book of photographs \u201creveals <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/books\/9381902\/death-wears-bling-the-glory-of-londons-caribbean-funerals\/\" target=\"_blank\">the British West Indian experience of death<\/a> in all its pathos, occasional comedy, and life-affirming sense of the funeral as essentially a fun-for-all \u2026 In [Charlie] Phillips\u2019s moving and often beautiful images, dating from 1962 to the present, the bereaved are seen to face the mystery of the end of life in stush black suits, spidery hat veils, Rastafari head-ties, spiffy trilbies and strictly-come-dancehall white
