Go online at once and buy several copies of\u00a0<em>McCall\u2019s Giant Golden Make-it Book<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Until recently, I had totally forgotten about the\u00a0<em>Giant Golden Make-it Book<\/em>, but I ran across a copy at a used bookstore and immediately realized how well it\u2019s held up. Simply put, no modern activity book can compare. It\u2019s truly giant, and really comprehensive, but like the same-vintage Betty Crocker\u2019s <em>Cookbook for Boys and Girls<\/em>, it\u2019s as much about the illustrations as the ideas. A smart publisher has seen fit to reissue the latter; <em>McCall\u2019s<\/em> really needs to do likewise.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s everything you might hope for\u2014games and homemade costumes and simple recipes and easy knitting instruction and theme parties\u2014but also a lot of things that never occurred to you. Dutch painting! Soap carving! Elementary flower arranging!\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879583449_be934aaf4f_b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-80458\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879583449_be934aaf4f_b.jpg\" alt=\"6879583449_be934aaf4f_b\" width=\"600\" height=\"591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879583449_be934aaf4f_b.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879583449_be934aaf4f_b-300x295.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Because this giant golden book was popular, and came out in several editions in the fifties and early sixties, it is not that hard to find. It was also well made, so despite its age and the fact that it was intended for young children, a lot of the sturdy volumes\u2014hardcover, issued without a dust jacket\u2014have held up.<\/p>\n<p>It is of its times, and some things date. A modern equivalent would certainly illustrate a wider range of children, for starters. But it\u2019s not particularly gendered\u2014boys and girls do all the activities interchangeably.<\/p>\n<p>One of the difficulties for the modern child user would be sourcing some of the materials: say,\u00a0acquiring the copper sulfates\u00a0for your chemical garden.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879567683_0e7e4e3ff3_b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-80457\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879567683_0e7e4e3ff3_b.jpg\" alt=\"6879567683_0e7e4e3ff3_b\" width=\"600\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879567683_0e7e4e3ff3_b.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/6879567683_0e7e4e3ff3_b-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What I like about this book, as both a child and now as an adult, is the sense of possibility it gives children.
