Author of <em>Generation X<\/em>, and conflicted progenitor of the same term; occasional\u00a0<em>Financial Times<\/em> columnist; one-time <em>Paris Review Daily<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2011\/02\/01\/douglas-coupland-on-marshall-mcluhan\/\">interviewee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You may now see his likeness swathed in chewing gum.<\/p>\n<p>Coupland, who\u2019s also a visual artist, constructed a seven-foot sculpture of his head from polyester and resin. It sat outside the Vancouver Art Gallery all summer long, where passersby were encouraged to deposit their gum on it.<\/p>\n<p>He calls it \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanartgallery.bc.ca\/the_exhibitions\/exhibit_gumhead.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Gumhead<\/em><\/a>. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first the added gum looked like jewels against the black,\u201d Coupland said <a href=\"http:\/\/metronews.ca\/news\/vancouver\/1118090\/qa-douglas-coupland-dishes-on-gooey-gumhead-statue\/#\" target=\"_blank\">in an interview<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen people interact so intimately and for such a long time as they do with <em>Gumhead<\/em>. And people who drive past it every day like to monitor its progress. It\u2019s eight pieces in one: a self-portrait, a still life, a landscape, social sculpture, performance art, conceptual art and time-based art. And it wants to be your friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may be jealous of the citizens of Vancouver\u2014I am, kind of. For who <em>doesn\u2019t<\/em> harbor within oneself the latent desire to cover one of the nineties\u2019 most prominent literary names in bits of flavored, food-grade butyl rubber, wet with one\u2019s own saliva? You can do that in January, in Toronto, when <em>Gumhead<\/em>\u2014restored to its original pristine condition\u2014arrives as part of Coupland\u2018s \u201ceverywhere is anywhere is anything is everything\u201d exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>Pro tip: bring colorful gum. \u201cThe big surprise,\u201d Coupland said, \u201cwas mango-flavored Hubba Bubba, which provides rich vibrant deep yellow hits of color. Also, people don\u2019t seem to chew pink bubble-gum much any more. It\u2019s like almost the entire gum industry has moved over to off-whites.
