(\u201cGreat fucking line,\u201d he\u2019s written next to \u201cThe subway seals you durably in the stone of the moment.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>In the thirties, William Mortensen was one of the most celebrated photographers in the nation\u2014his pictures were \u201cunabashedly theatrical, bizarre, and often louche.\u201d What sank his reputation: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-ca-jc-william-mortensen-20141130-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">a critical tiff with Ansel Adams<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Chinese State Administration for Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2014\/nov\/28\/china-media-watchdog-bans-wordplay-puns?CMP=twt_gu\" target=\"_blank\">has moved to ban wordplay<\/a>\u00a0\u201con the grounds that it breaches the law on standard spoken and written Chinese, makes promoting cultural heritage harder and may mislead the public\u2014especially children.\u201d (An example of the now forbidden fruit: \u201creplacing a single character in <em>ke bu rong huan<\/em> has turned \u2018brook no delay\u2019 into \u2018coughing must not linger\u2019 for a medicine ad.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re on censorship: In the quest for G-rated moon landings, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/how-nasa-censored-dirty-mouthed-astronauts-180953470\/\" target=\"_blank\"><small>NASA<\/small> used to go to great lengths to scrub astronauts\u2019 profanity from its transcripts<\/a>. In the case of one particularly salty spaceman, they went further\u2014they had him hypnotized. \u201cA psychiatrist put the idea in his head that he would rather hum when his mind wandered.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/culture\/books\/once-upon-a-time-a-short-history-of-fairy-tale-by-marina-warner-1.2010599?page=1\" target=\"_blank\">the history of fairy tales<\/a>: \u201cIn the coded language of symbol and metaphor they chart the journey from childhood to adulthood.
