D. James <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/28\/arts\/international\/p-d-james-mystery-novelist-known-as-queen-of-crime-dies-at-94.html\" target=\"_blank\">is dead at ninety-four<\/a>. \u201c\u2018When I first heard that Humpty Dumpty fell off the wall,\u2019 she was fond of saying, \u2018I immediately wondered: Did he fall \u2014 or was he pushed?\u2019\u2009\u201d (James was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/1627\/the-art-of-fiction-no-141-p-d-james\">interviewed for <em>The Paris Review<\/em>\u2019s Art of Fiction series<\/a> in 1995.)<\/li>\n<li>Black Friday is hell. But now there is a new hell, for there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/business\/currency\/walmart-black-friday-week\" target=\"_blank\">New Black Friday<\/a>. (It involves Walmart and money.)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIn recent years, not just in novels but in movies, television, poetry, video games and the visual arts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/190329\/grim-reapers\" target=\"_blank\">drones have taken on a life of their own<\/a>. As a character, they are menacing, melancholy or gallant; beastly, blind, snub-nosed, noisy and fast\u2014Predators and Reapers in real life, \u2018Helicarriers\u2019 in Hollywood. They are the oversize hook at the end of a joystick, a militarized, antiseptic video game characterized by precision; or they are a weapon system proliferating at a breathtaking rate, and leaving a trail of destruction behind. They show off the military talent of their users, or they are an expression of unbridled hubris. They represent protection or extermination\u2014and they carry out both things at once.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1948, an eleven-year-old girl named Sally Horner was abducted\u2014and the details of the case <a href=\"http:\/\/penguinrandomhouse.ca\/hazlitt\/longreads\/real-lolita\" target=\"_blank\">bear more than a passing resemblance to <em>Lolita<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Something to ponder over leftovers: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/arts-culture\/thanksgiving-in-literature-719722\/?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">the literature of Thanksgiving<\/a>.
