In \u201cThe Blue Silk,\u201d an 1884 short story in the <em>Saturday Evening Post<\/em>, \u201cthe protagonist, Louisa, buys a pre-owned dress from the \u2018Jewess behind the counter\u2019 of a resale store. When she wears it to a party, not only is she is socially ostracized for wearing the old dress of another girl, but she comes down with smallpox because of contamination from the resale store.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The photographer Steven Hirsch has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2014\/nov\/25\/gowanus-mosaic-filth\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new series on the Gowanus Canal<\/a>, a Superfund site in Brooklyn: \u201cThe images are solely concerned with the surface of the water\u2014the gonorrhea, coli, and putida bacteria that cling to one another there in a mosaic of filth. These microorganisms and pathogens create a kind of membrane on the surface of the canal, \u2018like an acetate,\u2019 says Hirsch. In the illusions of light and liquid they look like a solid substance, but when, out of curiosity, Hirsch tried to scoop them up they immediately dissolved.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2014\/11\/24\/bogus_academic_journal_accepts_paper_that_reads_get_me_off_your_fucking.html\" target=\"_blank\">An entire cottage industry of malfeasance and predation has erected itself<\/a>\u201d around academic research journals, including a popular pay-to-play scam that asks scholars to pony up for inclusion in such bogus publications as the <em>International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology<\/em>. Recently, a researcher sent that \u201cjournal\u201d an abstract; it just said \u201cGet me off your fucking mailing list\u201d over and over again. \u201cTo his mild surprise, not only was this groundbreaking study accepted\u2014with fraudulent peer reviews and everything!\u2014it was put into layout, and a PDF was generated for his \u2018perusal,\u2019 along with, of course, a humble request for $150, to be submitted by wire transfer, as all legitimate scholarly transactions are.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The writer J\u00f6rg Fauser <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/booksblog\/2014\/nov\/26\/jorg-fauser-beats-german-counter-culture\" target=\"_blank\">was an essential part of the German counterculture<\/a>, but English-language readers know almost nothing about him. A new translation of his novel <em>Raw Material<\/em> is coming: \u201cTo foist a genre on it, it\u2019s a picaresque, but what a crazed, leaping, unmoored and hilarious voyage it is.\u201d I particularly like its take on booze: \u201cDrink is an immersive, highly social drug that can often lead to new friendships and interesting sexual adventures.
