It is twenty-four minutes well spent. There\u2019s the poetry: Larkin reads \u201cHere\u201d and \u201cA Study of Reading Habits\u201d and \u201cToads Revisited\u201d and \u201cChurch Going\u201d and \u201cWants.\u201d Betjeman inventories the wares of a Hull department store like a mystical incantation.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s the deliberate portrait of Larkin&#8217;s circumscribed existence: we see his flat, the cemeteries and streets where he walked, and of course, the library where he worked.<\/p>\n<p>Betjeman was a great champion of\u00a0<i>The Whitsun Weddings<\/i>,<i>\u00a0<\/i>and his knowledge of and admiration for Larkin\u2019s work is clear. The portrait is certainly what both poets would have wished, carefully orchestrated from its location to its doleful closing quotation. And yet, there is the great, odd moment\u00a0when Betjeman says, \u201cI envy you, being a librarian.
