In the meantime, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gargoylemagazine.com\/gargoyle\/Issues\/scanned\/issue22\/gordon.htm\">this interview<\/a> with her in <em>Gargoyle Magazine<\/em> that took place sometime in 1983. \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Amid all of the bleak Ireland-is-down-the-toilet-again talk emanating from across the Atlantic (often via those miserly analysts at Standard &#038; Poor\u2019s), I was tickled and cheered by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/features\/2010\/1117\/1224283516687.html\n\">a short piece<\/a> in <em>The Irish Times<\/em> in which readers tweeted their favorite things about the country. I found myself laughing and nodding in agreement as I scanned the list of oddities that all Irish people seem to indulge in or enjoy. \u2014<strong>Brenda Collins <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I finally cracked <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/What-All-This-Uncollected-Stories\/dp\/160699350X\">What Is All This?<\/a><\/em>, Stephen Dixon\u2019s mammoth collection of previously unpublished stories\u2014and it\u2019s terrific stuff. The book itself is also quite pleasing. Dixon still composes his stories on a typewriter (a Hermes Standard, the same brand Douglas Adams used), and Fantagraphics\u2019 whiz art director, Jacob Covey, has mimicked the unevenness and smudges of typewritten text on the cover and section pages. It\u2019s great design porn. \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How can you deny your love for Joan Didion, especially when she\u2019s writing about Woody Allen? A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/articles\/archives\/1979\/aug\/16\/letter-from-manhattan\/\">vintage piece<\/a> from <em>The New York Review of Books<\/em>. \u2014<strong>T. L.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Larry Levis isn\u2019t exactly a household name\u2014then again, so few poets are\u2014but he should be. Start with his collection <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Widening-Spell-Leaves-Pitt-Poetry\/dp\/0822954540\/\"><em>The Widening Spell of the Leaves<\/em><\/a>, specifically the poem, \u201cThe Spell of the Leaves,\u201d which begins, \u201cHer husband left her suddenly. Then it was autumn.&#8221; Some lines later, this brutal description of the abandoned wife waiting in the car, out of habit, for her husband to drive her to work: \u201cLater she couldn\u2019t \/ Say whether an hour or only a few minutes \/ Had passed before she realized she didn\u2019t \/ Have a husband.\u201d It\u2019s heartbreaking (and also, strangely, an excellent tool of seduction). \u2014<strong>Miranda Popkey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once upon a time, Kate Bernheimer asked forty contemporary authors to pen stories that riffed on the fairytale tradition. What took shape was the dizzying <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Mother-She-Killed-Father-Ate\/dp\/014311784X \">My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me<\/a><\/em>, a collection by turns wicked, lyrical, and very, very funny. Where else can you find Jim Shepard in dialogue with Italo Calvino, or Aimee Bender working from Charles Perrault? All the readers in the kingdom lived happily ever after. \u2014<strong>Kate Waldman<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s it like <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.penelopetrunk.com\/2010\/11\/18\/what-its-like-to-have-sex-with-someone-with-aspergers\/\">to have sex<\/a> with someone with Asperger\u2019s? \u2014<strong>David Wallace-Wells<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you can get your hands on Lord of Misrule, the novel by Wednesday\u2019s National Book Award winner Jaimy Gordon, let me know (Amazon doesn\u2019t count).
