More contentious was the selection of the quotation for her plaque. The challenge was to tread a line between what Nelson called O\u2019Connor\u2019s \u2018grand pronouncements\u2019 and what Alfred Corn called her southern \u2018cracker-barrel humor.\u2019 The quote they settled on is from a 1953 letter that O\u2019Connor wrote to Elizabeth Hardwick and Robert Lowell \u2026 \u2018I can with one eye squinted take it all as a blessing.\u2019&thinsp;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>John le Carr\u00e9\u2019s <em>A Most Wanted Man<\/em> is banned at Guant\u00e1namo, and he\u2019s altogether pretty psyched about it: \u201cIn banning my novel, the custodians of Guant\u00e1namo have once again demonstrated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_uk\/read\/a-most-wanted-man-by-john-le-carre-964\" target=\"_blank\">their sensitivity and respect for human dignity<\/a>. No prisoner who has not been found guilty of any crime should be subjected to cruel and degrading literature.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in bold claims from evolutionary psychologists: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2014\/11\/have-you-heard-gossip-is-actually-good-and-useful\/382430\/?single_page=true\" target=\"_blank\">Gossip is what makes human society as we know it possible.<\/a>\u201d Tell all your friends.<\/li>\n<li>The long, strange birth of Fundamentalism in America: \u201cThe term itself was coined in the 1920s by American Protestants who resolved to return to the \u2018fundamentals\u2019 of Christianity. Their retreat from public life after the Civil War had narrowed and, perhaps, distorted their vision. Instead of engaging as before with such issues as racial or economic inequality, they focused on biblical literalism, <a href=\"http:\/\/penguinrandomhouse.ca\/hazlitt\/longreads\/religion-fights-back\" target=\"_blank\">convinced that every single assertion of scripture was literally true<\/a>.
