(\u201cThe story is that he had trained his cat to put out his night candle with his paw.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cGenre doesn\u2019t have to be vexing. It can be illuminating. It can be useful for writers and readers to think in terms of groups and traditions. And a good genre system\u2014a system that really fits reality\u2014can help us see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/joshua-rothman\/better-way-think-genre-debate?int-cid=mod-latest\" target=\"_blank\">the traditions in which we\u2019re already, unconsciously, immersed<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Sixty years ago, the CIA helped to bankroll England\u2019s first-ever animated film: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/film\/11209390\/How-the-CIA-brought-Animal-Farm-to-the-screen.html\" target=\"_blank\">an adaptation of <em>Animal Farm<\/em><\/a>. They thought it would make for great anti-Russian propaganda, especially if they changed the ending, and they knew it would be cheaper to make it in England. \u201cThe CIA agent who bought the film rights supposedly promised Mrs. Orwell that he would arrange for her to meet her favorite star, Clark Gable.\u201d Did such a meeting ever occur? When will our government finally tell us the<em> truth<\/em>?<\/li>\n<li>Oops: \u201cDo you remember when the Authors Guild sued Google over Google Book Search, which is basically the right to make an index of stuff in books? They said to Google, \u2018If you\u2019re going to do this, you\u2019re going to do it on our terms, and you\u2019re going to have to give us a whole $70 million.\u2019 \u2026 Google said, \u2018$70 million? Let\u2019s shake the sofa and find some change for you.\u2019 Meanwhile, you are guaranteeing that nobody else in the future history of the world will be able to afford to index books, which is one of the ways people find and buy books. Now Google owns that forever, for a mere $70 million! Nice work, Authors Guild. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/11\/06\/cory_doctorow_were_all_sharecroppers_in_googles_fields_for_the_rest_of_eternity\/\" target=\"_blank\">You\u2019ve just made us all sharecroppers in Google\u2019s fields<\/a> for the rest of eternity.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The latest battle in the Usage Wars is really heating up: \u201cIf you say \u2018It\u2019s not you, it\u2019s me,\u2019 you are probably a native speaker of English or someone with a good command of how native speakers actually speak. If you say \u2018It\u2019s not you\u2014it\u2019s I,\u2019 you will quickly achieve the goal of making the other person not want to spend any more time with you. Yet this bizarre formulation is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2014\/11\/johnson-pronouns\" target=\"_blank\">just how Nathan Heller of <em>The New Yorker <\/em>would have you speak<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fact: the New York Public Library has among its possessions a letter opener with a handle made from the paw of Charles Dickens\u2019s dead cat.
