Photo: William Karl Valentine, via Slate<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>A certain Gen-X urtext is now twenty years old and all the more interesting for it: \u201cI discovered that <em>Reality Bites<\/em>, weirdly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psmag.com\/navigation\/business-economics\/reality-bites-still-biting-winona-ryder-generation-x-millennials-93324\/\" target=\"_blank\">provides interesting commentary about the economy<\/a>. In fact, it\u2019s a film about money. To be a little more specific, the movie explores a deep, complicated ambivalence about work, freedom, capitalist impulses, and authenticity \u2026 Their story looks a lot less romantic from the vantage point of middle age. Generation X has turned out to be not so much indifferent to money as screwed by it.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In praise of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2014\/11\/stop-making-excuses-and-finish-that-book\/381795\/?single_page=true\" target=\"_blank\">finishing every book you start<\/a>: \u201cThe most common defense of book-dropping I hear is that because there are more good books than any one person could possibly read, it\u2019s stupid to waste time on a dull or otherwise unsatisfactory novel. That argument makes sense if the novel is utter trash\u2014if it\u2019s so bad that the reader needn\u2019t respect the author and would possibly get dumber by going forward. But if a novel starts well and descends into trash, then it seems to me that it\u2019s worth continuing to see if it gets better, or to see where the writer went wrong.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Your bladder is more than just an organ. It affects your stance <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-philosophical-implications-of-the-urge-to-urinate\/\" target=\"_blank\">on one of the most knotted, hotly debated questions<\/a> in philosophical history. \u201cEven healthy subjects have less belief in free will when they\u2019re subtly reminded of their own physical limitations. [Two scientists] had people respond to a battery of questions not just about free will, but also about their current corporal desires. The desires that negatively correlated most strongly to belief in freedom were: a) the desire to urinate, b) the desire to sleep, and c) the desire to have sex.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1985\u2014years before <em>Cops <\/em>had proven that America loves to watch its enforcers in action\u2014a photography major at Arizona State went on spring break and began to photograph the Pasadena Police Department. Now he\u2019s published the photos: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/behold\/2014\/11\/05\/william_karl_valentine_an_insider_s_look_into_the_pasadena_police_force.html?wpsrc=fol_tw\" target=\"_blank\">Welcome to hell<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Total number of kisses in Jane Austen novels: fourteen. Total number of speeches in Shakespeare: 34,895. And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2014\/10\/29\/who-says-you-can-t-quantify-literature.html\" target=\"_blank\">other statistics<\/a> that won\u2019t do much to improve your enjoyment of literature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A certain Gen-X urtext is now twenty years old and all the more interesting for it: \u201cI discovered that Reality Bites, weirdly, provides interesting commentary about the economy.
