He said, the books don\u2019t really have any focus, it\u2019s just loose, it\u2019s like just having some songs about drinking and they don\u2019t have anything else. But it\u2019s in that band photo, that image, where everything comes together. He wondered if I had a certain point in my writing, because it\u2019s all, you know, bits and pieces and nothing. And then he saw pictures of me, he said, \u2018You pose like a rock star, you kind of summarize everything there\u2019 \u2026 He meant it really, really badly.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in the anxiety of influence: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2014\/11\/the-boy-who-would-be-crichton.html\" target=\"_blank\">the aftereffects of one writer\u2019s childhood obsession with Michael Crichton<\/a>. \u201cMuch of the rhythm and timbre I claimed as my own in fact belonged to Crichton: isolating revelatory sentences on a line break between paragraphs \u2026 complex sentences interspersed with short sentence fragments like the dots and dashes in Morse Code. Even in my early twenties, writing bad pseudo-autobiographical short stories, it seems that I had retained, by osmosis, the stylistic habits I\u2019d developed while eating ham-and-cheese sandwiches, drinking Coke, and imagining my name writ large on the shelves of an airport bookstore.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Just when you\u2019d been thinking, Hey, it\u2019s been a while since I heard a quality new acoustic musical instrument, along comes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2014\/11\/a-new-acoustic-instrument-that-creates-sounds-like-a-digital-synthesizer\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Yaybahar<\/a>, recently invented in Turkey; it uses \u201ca combination of two drum-like membranes, long springs, and a tall fretted neck\u201d to produce plaintive, resonant sounds.<\/li>\n<li>Must we continue to live in a world where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/oct\/28\/poetry-brothel-putting-bawd-in-bard\" target=\"_blank\">this is happening<\/a>? \u201cShe wears a leather corset and harem pants, like a gypsy girl from a fairytale. She is barefoot. In the dim candlelight, she asks what I\u2019m in the mood for\u2014something sexy? Something dark? I tell her what will please me, and she reads me a poem. She calls herself a poetry whore, and I have paid for her company. For the next ten minutes or so, she will read me her verses, converse with me, entertain me.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/forgotten-history-mace-designed-29-year-old-and-reinvented-police-weapon-180953239\/?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">Fun facts about mace<\/a>: it was invented in Pittsburgh in 1964 by a couple who kept an alligator in the basement. \u201cAt first they called it TGASI, for \u2018Tear Gas Aerosol Spray Instrument,\u2019\u00a0but soon they came up with the catchier name of \u2018Chemical Mace\u2019 \u2026\u00a0 the name implied that chemicals could produce the same incapacitating effect as a medieval mace\u2014a chilling design of spiked club\u2014but without causing the same brutal injuries.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new English-language interview with Knausgaard: \u201cI once met a German journalist who compared me to a rock band.
