Nothing could quicken the man\u2019s pulse like a good showing at the polls.<\/p>\n<p>As \u201cElection Day, November, 1884\u201d has it, he preferred the spectacle of democracy\u2014the \u201cballot-shower from East to West\u201d\u2014to any of our nation\u2019s natural wonders, including, but not limited to, Niagara Falls, the Mississippi River, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Great Lakes \u2026 you name it, Whitman thought the vote was better than it. (You\u2019d think someone could\u2019ve sold him on the Rockies, at least.) One can imagine a latter-day Whitman passing up a trip to the Grand Canyon and instead hunkering down at the TV, flipping anxiously from network to network as the precincts begin to report, wringing his hands. Not, mind you, that he would have any particular stake in the outcome; he\u2019d just be along for the great democratic ride, clucking his tongue at the gerrymanderers of the world.<\/p>\n<p>(If you need an antidote for all this unalloyed patriotism, try Charles Bernstein\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/poetry-of-america\/american-identity\/charlesbernstein-onelectionday.html\" target=\"_blank\">On Election Day<\/a>,\u201d which contains, among many excellent lines, \u201cThe air is putrid, red, interpolating, quixotic, torpid, vulnerable, on election day.\u201d I know which poet would get my vote.)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If I should need to name, O Western World, your powerfulest <br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0scene and show,<br \/>\u2019Twould not be you, Niagara\u2014nor you, ye limitless prairies\u2014nor <br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0your huge rifts of canyons, Colorado,<br \/>Nor you, Yosemite\u2014nor Yellowstone, with all its spasmic geyser-<br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0loops ascending to the skies, appearing and disappearing,<br \/>Nor Oregon\u2019s white cones\u2014nor Huron\u2019s belt of mighty lakes\u2014<br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0nor Mississippi\u2019s stream:<br \/>\u2014This seething hemisphere\u2019s humanity, as now, I\u2019d name\u2014 <em>the <\/em><br \/><em>still small voice<\/em> vibrating\u2014America\u2019s choosing day,<br \/>(The heart of it not in the chosen\u2014the act itself the main, the <br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0quadriennial choosing,)<br \/>The stretch of North and South arous\u2019d\u2014sea-board and inland <br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u2014Texas to Maine\u2014the Prairie States\u2014Vermont, Virginia, <br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0California,<br \/>The final ballot-shower from East to West\u2014the paradox and con-<br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0flict,<br \/>The countless snow-flakes falling\u2014(a swordless conflict,<br \/>Yet more than all Rome\u2019s wars of old, or modern Napoleon\u2019s:) <br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the peaceful choice of all,<br \/>Or good or ill humanity\u2014welcoming the darker odds, the dross:<br \/>\u2014Foams and ferments the wine? it serves to purify\u2014while the <br \/> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0heart pants, life glows:<br \/>These stormy gusts and winds waft precious ships,<br \/>Swell\u2019d Washington\u2019s, Jefferson\u2019s, Lincoln\u2019s sails.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A reminder: Walt Whitman really, really liked Election Day.
