Here\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_vault\/2014\/11\/03\/edgar_allan_poe_biography_his_bankruptcy_petition_from_1842.html?utm_content=bufferb4915&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">a long list of his debts<\/a>, with creditors listed in Philadelphia, Richmond, and New York, and orderly columns of numbers that grow large enough to give you a sympathetic panic attack.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIf ambitious writers work at the boundaries of the written language (as they should), then they ought do it from a path of mastery, not ignorance; broken rules carry no power if writers and readers don\u2019t notice the transgressions. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/cultural-comment\/steven-pinkers-bad-grammar\" target=\"_blank\">Proper usage shows us where the earth is<\/a>, so that, when the time comes, we know what it means to fly.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Not unrelatedly: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/articles\/whatever-you-say_817754.html?nopager=1\" target=\"_blank\">Dickens published an essay on slang<\/a>, probably by George Augustus Sala. The 1853 article expressed the view that either slang should be \u2018banished, prohibited\u2019 or that there should be a New Dictionary that would\u00a0\u2018give a local habitation and a name to all the little by-blows of language skulking and rambling about our speech, like the ragged little Bedouins about our shameless streets, and give them a settlement and a parish.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In which Ann Patchett reminds readers of the <em>New York Times<\/em> that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/02\/books\/review\/letters-the-sense-of-style.html\" target=\"_blank\">she\u2019s not married to her dog<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI found it odd that there had never been a scientist as a Man Booker judge. There have been many non-literary types amongst the judges: a former spy, a former dancer, a Downton Abbey actor\u2014but science, apparently, was a step too far. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2014\/11\/year-i-became-first-scientist-judge-man-booker\" target=\"_blank\">Until this year, when I joined the judging panel<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edgar Allan Poe filed for bankruptcy in 1842.
