B., the type-two apparition \u201cleaves behind appalling ectoplasm stains on wallpaper and soft furnishings.\u201d)<\/li>\n<li>Today in zingers and put-downs, we bring you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2014\/10\/weird-realism-john-gray-moral-universe-h-p-lovecraft\" target=\"_blank\">Edmund Wilson on H. P. Lovecraft<\/a>, 1945: \u201cThe only real horror in most of these fictions is the horror of bad taste and bad art.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Whither the artist residency? Say you\u2019re a serious, industrious, diligent artist whose working life requires \u201csolitude, beauty, the natural sublime, and global travel \u2026 extended stretches of time, free of any interruption, in order to create new work. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/artists-search-inspiration-can-now-find-thier-muse-cargo-ship-180953189\/?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">All of this can be found on a container ship<\/a>.\u201d A new residency called Container gives artists the chance to work on just such a ship. (\u201cArtists won\u2019t have to live in a container,\u201d the program hastens to add.)<\/li>\n<li>And while we\u2019re hithering and thithering: Whither Ethan Hawke, who seems finally to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2014\/10\/manhood-how-ethan-hawke-finally-grew-up.html\" target=\"_blank\">escaped the long shadow of the nineties<\/a>? \u201cEthan Hawke was once the mascot we did not ask for. He has become the one we deserve.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>To raise money for Freedom from Torture, seventeen authors\u2014including Margaret Atwood, Julian Barnes, Ken Follett, Hanif Kureishi, Will Self, Alan Hollinghurst, and Zadie Smith\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2014\/10\/28\/authors-auction-off-novelistic-naming-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\">are offering the rights to name characters in their new novels<\/a>.
