Flanagan himself has said that \u2018it\u2019s a strange story that isn\u2019t readily absorbed into any nation\u2019s dreams.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Flanagan\u2019s name is also set to appear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mhpbooks.com\/royal-mail-celebrates-booker-winner-with-innovative-new-postmark\/\" target=\"_blank\">on a special British postmark<\/a> congratulating him on the Booker. \u201cWe\u2019re really pleased to share his success in winning this renowned literary award with a postmark that will be delivered to addresses nationwide.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cOne way researchers have tried to measure <a href=\"http:\/\/laphamsquarterly.org\/time\/grand-illusion\" target=\"_blank\">the subjective flow of time<\/a> is by asking people of different ages to estimate when a certain amount of time has gone by. People in their early twenties tend to be quite accurate in judging when three minutes had elapsed, typically being off by no more than three seconds. Those in their sixties, by contrast, overshot the mark by forty seconds; in other words, what was actually three minutes and forty seconds seemed like only three minutes to them. Seniors are internally slow tickers, so for them actual clocks seem to tick too fast.\u201d (That\u2019s from <em>Lapham\u2019s Quarterly<\/em>\u2019s elegant new Web site, by the way\u2014note it.)<\/li>\n<li>Pittsburgh\u2019s City of Asylum, which provides sanctuary to exiled writers from around the world, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityofasylumpittsburgh.org\/ai1ec_event\/exiled-voices-2014\/?instance_id=555\" target=\"_blank\">celebrates its tenth anniversary this weekend<\/a> with an event featuring their five current residents, Huang Xiang, Horacio Castellanos Moya, Khet Mar, Israel Centeno, and Yaghoub Yadali.<\/li>\n<li>Why did Sartre <a href=\"http:\/\/thesmartset.com\/article\/article10141401.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">refuse the Nobel Prize in 1964<\/a>? \u201cSartre\u2019s rejection of the Nobel Prize was not personal. It was metaphysical. Every act I take as a writer, Sartre was saying, affects the existence of my readers. Accepting the Nobel Prize would have been, for Sartre, to compromise the freedom of his readers.
