Also idiocy\u2014Julian Barnes recalls an encounter after his novel <em>Flaubert\u2019s Parrot<\/em> failed to win the prize: \u201cI was introduced after the ceremony to one of the judges, who said to me: \u2018I hadn\u2019t even heard of this fellow Flaubert before I read your book. But afterwards I sent out for all his novels in paperback.\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The guillotine at the dawn of the media age: in the Paris of 1939, the simplest way to stop executions was to film them. \u201cUnbeknownst to Parisian prison officials, a film camera had been set up in one of the apartments overlooking the Place Louis-Barthou. The film recorded [an] execution and by the next morning photographic stills appeared on the cover of nearly every French newspaper \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/theappendix.net\/issues\/2014\/10\/photographing-the-guillotine\" target=\"_blank\">The public was scandalized by their own violence<\/a>; the government embarrassed. In response France banned public executions.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>James Wood on the Australian novelist Elizabeth Harrower, whose work is back in print after twenty years: \u201c[Harrower] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2014\/10\/20\/time-lies\" target=\"_blank\">essentially terminated her literary career<\/a>. She has said that she thinks of her fiction as something abandoned long ago, buried in a cellar. She can\u2019t now be bothered with writing. \u2018I don\u2019t know anybody who knows I\u2019m a writer,\u2019 she said in 2012.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Against <em>basic<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/thecut\/2014\/10\/what-do-you-really-mean-by-basic-bitch.html\" target=\"_blank\">the most modish putdown of 2014<\/a>: \u201cWhile what it pretends to criticize is unoriginality of thought and action, most of what <em>basic<\/em> actually seeks to dismiss is consumption patterns\u2014what you watch, what you drink, what you wear, and what you buy\u2014without dismissing consumption itself. The basic girl\u2019s sin isn\u2019t liking to shop, it\u2019s cluelessly lusting after the wrong brands, the ones that announce themselves loudly and have shareholders they need to satisfy.
