I aver that everybody connected in any way with it, except me, had a stinking pole cat for a mother and father.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Thomas Pynchon doesn\u2019t enjoy talking to reporters, but he\u2019s not really a recluse\u2014who saddled him with that reputation? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vice.com\/read\/who-is-thomas-pynchon-and-why-did-he-take-off-with-my-life-198\" target=\"_blank\">It may have been none other than our own founding editor<\/a>: \u201cIt all started fifty-one years ago, in 1963, when George Plimpton in the <em>New York Times <\/em>published the line: \u2018Pynchon is in his early twenties; he writes in Mexico City\u2014a recluse.\u2019 It is doubtful if Plimpton, who helped create <em>The\u00a0Paris Review<\/em>, knew at the time that he was accidentally kicking off the largest and longest game of <em>Where\u2019s Waldo?<\/em> ever conceived. Nevertheless, the label has stuck.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Daily bummer: \u201cWe must reckon with the fact that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/181809\/extinction-pop\" target=\"_blank\">pop culture really likes to be agreeable<\/a> along with its thrills. It likes to say yes, and makes endless conciliations to do so. It is safer to say yes. Yes can be deeply pleasurable. History is made by those who say no.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Kierkegaard\u2019s prescience extends to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brainpickings.org\/2014\/10\/13\/kierkegaard-diary-bullying-trolling-haters\/?utm_content=buffer8fea7&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">cyberbullying and trolls<\/a>: \u201cIf, for instance, I enter a place where many are gathered, it often happens that one or another right away takes up arms against me by beginning to laugh; presumably he feels that he is being a tool of public opinion. But lo and behold, if I then make a casual remark to him, that same person becomes infinitely pliable and obliging \u2026 That is what comes of living in a petty community.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Is contemplation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/tech\/elements\/thinking-alone?int-cid=mod-latest\" target=\"_blank\">a pleasant exercise<\/a>? No, experts say, \u201cmost people would rather give themselves an electric shock than be alone with their thoughts.\u201d But \u201cproclaiming that we\u2019re unable to enjoy our own thoughts suggests that our mental weather is always supposed to be pleasant \u2026 The human mind is not meant to resemble a postcard from paradise forever fixed in a state of tropical bliss.
