His work evokes \u201cthe most ungraspable human destinies,\u201d the Swedish Academy says. Apologies to the many runners up whose work evokes only the second most ungraspable human destinies.<\/li>\n<li>Such as, oh, say, Philip Roth: \u201cFor years, the story goes, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/emma-brockes-column\/2014\/oct\/09\/patrick-modiano-nobel-prize-literature-prize-philip-roth-loser\" target=\"_blank\">Roth would actually make the trip into New York<\/a> to wait in his agents\u2019 office for the call, a rough publicity schedule ready to be printed and activated. There he would sit, in a meeting room presumably prepared with refreshments, and at the end of the day, make the long, sad trip back to Connecticut.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere\u2019s been a trend, in recent years, of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/novelize-novelist\" target=\"_blank\">novels based on the biographies of novelists<\/a>. If some readers might recoil from the genre, the success of writers such as Colm T\u00f3ib\u00edn (who novelized the life of Henry James) and David Lodge (who also wrote a fictional account of James, as well as of H. G. Wells) suggest that a fictionalized life can revivify even the most heavily biographized writers\u2014or at least those from the turn of the nineteenth century.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Newly discovered Indonesian cave paintings, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/rockart-ages-indonesian-cave-paintings-are-40000-years-old-180952970\/?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">some forty thousand years old<\/a>, suggest \u201ca new view about modern human origins, about when we became cognitively modern.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Pong, the video game that launched an entire industry, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/technology\/technology\/2014\/10\/the_invention_of_pong_how_nolan_bushnell_launched_the_video_game_industry.single.html\" target=\"_blank\">was first manufactured in an abandoned roller rink<\/a>: \u201cThe <em>Pong<\/em> games were put together not on an assembly line but in the middle of the floor, with young workers ambling up to stick in the various components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just in case you haven\u2019t heard: the French writer Patrick Modiano has won the Nobel Prize in Literature.
