You\u2019ve probably seen the 1982 movie; maybe you\u2019ve caught one of the musical\u2019s many revivals. And most everybody knows that the musical itself was adapted from a popular and long-running comic strip. But did you know that all those were based, in turn, on the 1885 poem \u201cLittle Orphant Annie?\u201d Or that James Whitcomb Riley wrote the poem about a real-life orphan, Allie? And that it\u2019s creepy and scary? Well, now you do!<\/p>\n<p>Mary Alice \u201cAllie\u201d Smith was an Indiana neighbor of the Riley family. When her father was killed in the Civil War, twelve-year-old Allie\u2014the name change was a typographical error\u2014came to live with the Rileys; the future poet was a child himself. Allie apparently entertained the other children of an evening with scary stories that made a huge impression on young James. The poem, which is made up of Allie\u2019s cautionary stories, was one of his most popular, and a major part of his well-attended speaking tours. Well, it <em>was<\/em> the Victorian era. <!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>Little Orphant Annie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Little Orphant Annie\u2019s come to our house to stay,<br \/>An\u2019 wash the cups an\u2019 saucers up, an\u2019 brush the crumbs away,<br \/>An\u2019 shoo the chickens off the porch, an\u2019 dust the hearth, an\u2019 sweep,<br \/>An\u2019 make the fire, an\u2019 bake the bread, an\u2019 earn her board-an\u2019-keep;<br \/>An\u2019 all us other children, when the supper-things is done,<br \/>We set around the kitchen fire an\u2019 has the mostest fun<br \/>A-list\u2019nin\u2019 to the witch-tales \u2018at Annie tells about,<br \/>An\u2019 the Gobble-uns \u2018at gits you<br \/>Ef you<br \/>Don\u2019t<br \/>Watch<br \/>Out!<br \/>Wunst they wuz a little boy wouldn\u2019t say his prayers,\u2014<br \/>An\u2019 when he went to bed at night, away up-stairs,<br \/>His Mammy heerd him holler, an\u2019 his Daddy heerd him bawl,<br \/>An\u2019 when they turn\u2019t the kivvers down, he wuzn\u2019t there at all!<br \/>An\u2019 they seeked him in the rafter-room, an\u2019 cubby-hole, an\u2019 press,<br \/>An\u2019 seeked him up the chimbly-flue, an\u2019 ever\u2019-wheres, I guess;<br \/>But all they ever found wuz thist his pants an\u2019 roundabout:\u2014<br \/>An\u2019 the Gobble-uns \u2018ll git you<br \/>Ef you<br \/>Don\u2019t<br \/>Watch<br \/>Out!<br \/>An\u2019 one time a little girl \u2018ud allus laugh an\u2019 grin,<br \/>An\u2019 make fun of ever\u2019 one, an\u2019 all her blood-an\u2019-kin;<br \/>An\u2019 wunst, when they was \u201ccompany,\u201d an\u2019 ole folks wuz there,<br \/>She mocked \u2018em an\u2019 shocked \u2018em, an\u2019 said she didn\u2019t care!<br \/>An\u2019 thist as she kicked her heels, an\u2019 turn\u2019t to run an\u2019 hide,<br \/>They wuz two great big Black Things a-standin\u2019 by her side,<br \/>An\u2019 they snatched her through the ceilin\u2019 \u2018fore she knowed what she\u2019s about!<br \/>An\u2019 the Gobble-uns \u2018ll git you<br \/>Ef you<br \/>Don\u2019t<br \/>Watch<br \/>Out!<br \/>An\u2019 little Orphant Annie says, when the blaze is blue,<br \/>An\u2019 the lamp-wick sputters, an\u2019 the wind goes woo-oo!<br \/>An\u2019 you hear the crickets quit, an\u2019 the moon is gray,<br \/>An\u2019 the lightnin\u2019-bugs in dew is all squenched away,\u2014<br \/>You better mind yer parunts, an\u2019 yer teachurs fond an\u2019 dear,<br \/>An\u2019 churish them \u2018at loves you, an\u2019 dry the orphant\u2019s tear,<br \/>An\u2019 he\u2019p the pore an\u2019 needy ones \u2018at clusters all about,<br \/>Er the Gobble-uns \u2018ll git you<br \/>Ef you<br \/>Don\u2019t<br \/>Watch<br \/>Out!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Incidentally, the poem was also the inspiration for Raggedy Ann; but that\u2019s a story for another day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There\u2019s a new iteration of\u00a0Annie opening this year, starring Quvenzhan\u00e9 Wallis as the plucky eponymous orphan.
