His drinking and womanizing, his unsoothable anguish, seem less the stuff of heroism than of mutinous neurotransmitters. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/remembering-john-berryman-giant-american-poetry-274854\" target=\"_blank\">I can all too easily imagine him today, sitting at a seminar table in Palo Alto or Iowa City<\/a>, buoyed by a decent dose of Wellbutrin, listening as some regular contributor to the <em>Northwestern Maine Quarterly Review<\/em> piously instructs impious John to simmer down, center himself, drop the unceasing allusions to Shakespeare, find his voice and tell us how he really feels.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cAs well as categorizing novels as well or poorly written, popular or unpopular, one could also, and perhaps more usefully, distinguish those that become part of <em>the conversation<\/em>, and those that do not. Jonathan Franzen\u2019s <em>The Corrections<\/em> became part of the national conversation; Lydia Davis\u2019s short stories, for all their brilliance, did not \u2026 John Updike\u2019s <em>Terrorist<\/em> was arguably his least talked-about novel \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2014\/oct\/01\/books-we-talk-about\/\" target=\"_blank\">But how does a book enter the conversation today<\/a>?\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/features\/9329312\/clive-james-on-his-late-flowering-i-am-in-the-slightly-embarrassing-position-where-i-write-poems-saying-im-about-to-die-and-then-dont\/\" target=\"_blank\">A good problem to have<\/a>: \u201cI am in the slightly embarrassing position where I write poems saying I am about to die and I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>An 1894 map by the New York Tenement-House Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_vault\/2014\/10\/02\/map_of_nationality_in_nineteenth_century_manhattan_frederick_e_pierce_map.html?utm_content=buffercd221&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">divides the city by nationality<\/a>. But you won\u2019t find Scotch, English, Welsh, Scandinavian, and Canadian New Yorkers on the map, because they were, according to its creator, \u201cin small numbers and perhaps less foreign than the others.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Orioles are in the playoffs, which means Baltimoreans are swilling profligate amounts of Natty Boh, the greatest bad beer in the world and one of the city\u2019s most cherished brands\u2014it dates back to 1885. (At least one Baltimorean would drink a can right now, even though it\u2019s nine-thirty\u00a0A.M. and he\u2019s in New York.) The only problem? \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/business\/currency\/pride-bohtimore?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">National Bohemian hasn\u2019t been locally owned since the nineteen-seventies, and it hasn\u2019t been brewed in Maryland in more than a decade<\/a> \u2026 Last month, it was announced that the brand\u2019s owner, Pabst, is being purchased by the Russian beverage company Oasis.\u201d Say it ain\u2019t Boh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remembering John Berryman, whose centenary is later this month: \u201cBerryman has not been forgotten, but his gnomic revelations have less force than they used to.
