After a tense board meeting, a high school in Highland Park, Texas, has demanded its students stop reading <em>The Art of Racing in the Rain<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Working Poor: Invisible in America<\/em>, <em>Siddhartha<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian<\/em>,\u00a0<em>An Abundance of Katherines<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Glass Castle: A Memoir<\/em>,\u00a0and <em>Song of Solomon<\/em>. \u201cParents and grandparents brought books flagged with sticky notes. They read excerpts of sex scenes, references to homosexuality, a description of a girl\u2019s abduction, and a passage that criticized capitalism.\u201d (Most of which you can find in a given issue of <em>The Paris Review<\/em>\u2014lock up your daughters.)<\/li>\n<li>Relatedly: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2014\/sep\/17\/what-is-censorship\/?insrc=wblu\" target=\"_blank\">What is censorship<\/a>? \u201cTo dismiss censorship as crude repression by ignorant bureaucrats is to get it wrong. Although it varied enormously, it usually was a complex process that required talent and training and that extended deep into the social order. It also could be positive. The approbations of the French censors testified to the excellence of the books deemed worthy of a royal privilege. They often resemble promotional blurbs on the back of the dust jackets on books today.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/181641\/shelf-life\" target=\"_blank\">Things from which invisible ink has been made<\/a>, through the ages: \u201cThe milk of figs, cows and nuts; lemon juice, orange juice and onion juice; saliva, urine, blood, vinegar, aspirin, and laxatives.\u201d Oh, and a dormouse\u2019s corpse \u2026 oh, and the display codes embedded in porn images\u2009\u2026<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/sep\/21\/emmanuel-carrere-most-important-french-writer-youve-never-heard-of\" target=\"_blank\">Talking to Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re<\/a>\u2014\u201cthe most important French writer you\u2019ve never heard of,\u201d unless you\u2019ve read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6254\/the-art-of-nonfiction-no-5-emmanuel-carrere\" target=\"_blank\">the Art of Nonfiction No. 5<\/a>\u2014about his new book <em>Limonov<\/em>, which comes out next month: \u201cIn the manner of Truman Capote\u00a0\u2026 Carr\u00e8re has waited, with the patience of a deer hunter, for the true story that would not only illuminate aspects of his own life, but also exemplify the puzzle of the post\u2013cold war west.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThe internet gives us everything that writing does not: it gives us what we dream about when sitting alone at our desks: contact with our tribe and the sense that we\u2019re in a community \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.themillions.com\/2014\/09\/the-trouble-with-writing-by-michelle-huneven.html\" target=\"_blank\">The internet reminds me of smoking<\/a>\u2014which I gave up almost twenty-seven years ago\u2014but whenever someone talked about cancer or heart disease it made me want to light up.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What not to do during Banned Books Week: ban seven books.
