It\u2019s a way of rendering permeable the surface lens that divides the underworld of fantasy from the \u2018painful realism\u2019 hovering above it, so that writer and reader at moments seem joined in not being totally certain whether what\u2019s happening on the page should be taken literally and naturalistically or as mythical, otherworldly.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt is almost unheard-of for the same writer to have a byline on the lead item in rival newspapers. But it has happened in Britain today\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.moreintelligentlife.com\/blog\/tim-de-lisle\/burns-day\" target=\"_blank\">to a man who last picked up his pen in 1796<\/a>.\u201d (Hint: think New Year\u2019s Eve.)<\/li>\n<li>Apple\u2019s iOS 8 includes QuickType, a predictive typing feature that suggests words you might want to type next. Followed to its extremes, <a href=\"http:\/\/languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu\/nll\/?p=14682&amp;utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">it takes one\u2019s sentences to strange and arguably poetic lands<\/a>: \u201cI have a great way of saying the government has ordered a pizza.\/ Yes, you do that for the rest of the day before I go to sleep.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/bombmagazine.org\/article\/10101\/ben-lerner-ariana-reines\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Lerner and Ariana Reines in conversation<\/a>: \u201cFor me, the cow is a real modernist figure. I feel like after God died, the cow became the onlooker in great works of modernism. It\u2019s the witness in Joyce, it shows up again and again\u2014for me, it\u2019s like the residue of the divine in the twentieth century.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In the eighties, Michael Chabon had a punk band in Pittsburgh. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.post-gazette.com\/ae\/music\/2014\/09\/17\/Author-Michael-Chabon-s-1984-Pittsburgh-punk-rock-performance-released-by-Mind-Cure\/stories\/201409170014\" target=\"_blank\">They were called the Bats<\/a>. One of his bandmates said, \u201cI just remembered being very impressed with his stage presence, like he\u2019d been waiting all his life to do
