But in the early eighties, amid all the Pollyannaism of the Bay Area, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebaffler.com\/salvos\/world-processor\" target=\"_blank\">a magazine called <em>Processed World<\/em><\/a> seemed to foresee all the resentments of the contemporary office drone. \u201cIn the writing \u2026 one can also find the beginnings of today\u2019s revolt against Silicon Valley and its pernicious mix of libertarian economics, techno-utopianism, and the deracinated remains of the sixties counterculture.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFingerprint words\u201d: the words and phrases we overuse to the point that they become our personal trademarks. (Mine are probably <em>foresee<\/em>, <em>edify<\/em>, and <em>floccinaucinihilipilification<\/em>.) The strangest thing about these words is that they\u2019re contagious: \u201cWe\u2019re all simultaneously donating to and stealing from those around us. But how do we pick up these linguistic signature words, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/life\/the_good_word\/2014\/09\/fingerprint_words_verbal_tics_that_define_us_and_how_they_spread_to_others.html\" target=\"_blank\">what is going on when we notice other people using those words<\/a> and we feel, well, a certain way about it?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Writers seeking peace, quiet, and old-fashioned American bonhomie: Washington, D.C.\u2019s Politics &amp; Prose is renting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/style-blog\/wp\/2014\/09\/10\/politics-prose-offers-a-room-of-ones-own\/\" target=\"_blank\">a cottage in Ashland, Virginia<\/a>\u2014a town where \u201cpeople wave at you from their front porch\u201d\u2014for weeklong retreats.<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frieze.com\/issue\/article\/in-focus-avery-singer\/\" target=\"_blank\">the performative paintings of Avery Singer<\/a>: \u201cThe gentle sarcasm embedded in her work is usually aimed at art-world stereotypes. Her first solo exhibition at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler in Berlin last year, for example, was a satiric take on the art industry and its conventions. Works with titles such as <em>The Studio Visit<\/em> (2012), <em>Jewish Artist and Patron<\/em> (2012) and <em>The Great Muses<\/em> (2013) play on myths around the romantic figure of the artist.
