There were no line breaks, and the stanzas had been jammed together into a block of text that looked like prose. The careful architecture of his poems had been leveled \u2026 That was three years ago, and digital publishing has evolved a lot since then. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/09\/15\/arts\/artsspecial\/line-by-line-e-books-turn-poet-friendly.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Publishers can now create e-books that better preserve a poet\u2019s meticulous formatting<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in academic tiffs: One professor tried to publish a controversial essay avowing that Shakespeare\u2019s works were written by Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/education\/educationnews\/11090085\/Shakespearean-academics-clash-over-conspiracy-theories.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Another professor offered a stern rebuke<\/a>: \u201cI simply find your reasoning, and your evidence, as unconvincing as those of Holocaust deniers, and other conspiracy theorists.\u201d Finger pointing and harrumphing ensued.<\/li>\n<li>Stop-and-frisk is more than just a widely reviled NYPD policy: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2014\/09\/15\/stop-frisk-sing?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it\u2019s an opera<\/a>!<\/li>\n<li>Has pop music <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/music_box\/2014\/09\/the_fade_out_in_pop_music_why_don_t_modern_pop_songs_end_by_slowly_reducing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bid adieu to the fade-out<\/a>? \u201cThe fade-out\u2014the technique of ending a song with a slow decrease in volume over its last few seconds\u2014became common in the 1950s and ruled for three decades. Among the year-end top ten songs for 1985, there\u2019s not one cold ending. But it\u2019s been on the downturn since the nineties, and the past few years have been particularly unkind. The year-end top ten lists for 2011, 2012, and 2013 yield a total of one fade-out.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On the Metropolitan Museum of Art\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/119356\/charles-james-reviewed-jennifer-homans?utm_content=bufferda2f1&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles James retrospective<\/a>: \u201cThe Met seems to be telling us\u2014showing us\u2014that we should view [dress and fashion] as high art.\u00a0This is not a new argument, of course, but in spite of past scholarly and curatorial efforts, it has never decisively taken hold \u2026 James would seem the perfect antidote, and in many ways he is: a great designer who was never a celebrity (few outside the field of fashion have ever heard of him), an inveterate craftsman who was also a genuinely imaginative artist\u2014a sculptor of satin and silk willing to sacrifice everything including profits for the perfect seam \u2026\u2009\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhen John Ashbery, the Pulitzer Prize\u2013winning poet, first learned that the digital editions of his poetry looked nothing like the print version, he was stunned.
