Your dissent will not be tolerated, peon.<\/li>\n<li>Elif Batuman on awkwardness, America\u2019s latest bugbear: \u201cWe have a hand signal for awkwardness, and we frame many thoughts and observations with \u2018that awkward moment when \u2026\u2009\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/cultural-comment\/awkward-age\" target=\"_blank\">When did awkwardness become so important to us<\/a>? \u2026 \u2018Awkward\u2019 implies both solidarity and implication. Nobody is exempt.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Apocalypse fiction as immigrant metaphor: \u201cThe same way X-Men comics are sometimes considered as representations of the American civil rights movement, <a href=\"http:\/\/penguinrandomhouse.ca\/hazlitt\/feature\/finding-home-apocalypse\" target=\"_blank\">the apocalypse genre represented my shifting understanding of\u00a0\u2018home\u2019<\/a> \u2026 For immigrants, solitude and the trap of memory are central conditions. The appeal of [apocalypse fiction] is that it renders this so finely.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The art of drug branding: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2014\/09\/the-darkly-funny-branding-drug-dealers-use-to-sell-heroin\/?mbid=social_twitter#slide-id-1490591\" target=\"_blank\">haunting, grimly comic logos on baggies of heroin<\/a>. \u201cReferences in the names reflected the addict\u2019s illusions of grandeur (So Amazing, Rolex, High Life) but also the insidious destructive nature of drugs and the ultimate endgame
