You put them there to round out and dignify the main text, but they\u2019re too raw to digest, and often stiff \u2026 Still, the back matter is not simply a garnish. Indexes open a text up. Notes are often integral to meaning, and, occasionally, they\u2019re beautiful, too.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>One way of arguing for the necessity of print: \u201cRather than stand on a street corner yelling, \u2018Literature is not commodity!\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publishersweekly.com\/pw\/by-topic\/authors\/interviews\/article\/63611-the-novel-as-core-sample-installation-art-and-the-novel-martha-baillie.html\" target=\"_blank\">I decided to inflict a series of physical experiments on my published work<\/a>, to take several copies of the new book, go at them with my hands, and see what might result. I stripped the book of its cover, bought a pouch of tobacco, tore the pages, rolled the words.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Among the many treasures of the Bodleian Libraries: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-literary-treasures-from-oxford-bodleian-libraries-20140829-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">A bivalve locket<\/a> with locks of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley\u2019s and Percy Bysshe Shelley\u2019s hair. \u2018Blessed are the eyes that saw him alive,\u2019 an inscription reads in Latin.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/Your-Brain-on-Metaphors\/148495\/\" target=\"_blank\">Metaphor is actually a fundamental constituent of language<\/a> \u2026 In the seemingly literal statement \u2018He\u2019s out of sight,\u2019 the visual field is metaphorized as a container that holds things \u2026 Ordinary language is saturated with metaphors. Our eyes point to where we\u2019re going, so we tend to speak of future time as being \u2018ahead\u2019 of us. When things increase, they tend to go up relative to us, so we tend to speak of stocks \u2018rising\u2019 instead of getting more expensive.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Really, though, if humanity discovered evidence of extraterrestrial life, could we be expected to behave ourselves? \u201cThere might be happiness and celebration to mark the end of isolation, or the news might be met with a shrug. But human nature suggests <a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/issue\/17\/big-bangs\/can-you-ever-really-know-an-extraterrestrial\" target=\"_blank\">it\u2019s more probable that this discovery triggers a chain of events that lead to utter disaster<\/a>. Suddenly your safe haven is threatened by an unknown \u2018them.\u2019 Your time-tested principles of governance and social order are put under pressure. Gossip, rumor, and conjecture will gnaw away at your stable home.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<p>1.
