Photo via Colossal<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>A previously unpublished chapter of <em>Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em>\u2014once \u201cdeemed too wild, subversive and insufficiently moral for the tender minds of British children\u201d\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/aug\/30\/roald-dahl-extract-unpublished-chapter-charlie-and-the-chocolate-factory\" target=\"_blank\">is now available for your delectation<\/a>. It features a jaunt into Wonka\u2019s Vanilla Fudge Room, where many wonders and precariously situated heavy machinery await. (Not an OSHA-compliant workplace, that chocolate factory.)<\/li>\n<li><em>Get Carter<\/em>, Ted Lewis\u2019s 1970 crime novel, has just been reissued: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-get-carter-and-the-birth-of-british-noir-20140902-story.html?track=rss&amp;utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;dlvrit=717819\" target=\"_blank\">As far as classic hard-boiled fiction, <em>Get Carter<\/em> is sui generis<\/a>, the place where British noir begins \u2026 there is no attempt to soften or sugarcoat \u2026 It is also, as the best noir always is, highly moral, although its morality is individual and distinct. What is important to us?, the book ponders. What do we need\u2014are we willing\u2014to sacrifice?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In praise of brevity in fiction: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/11068745\/Why-shorter-can-be-better.html\" target=\"_blank\">shorter novels can often be a distillation of everything an author does best<\/a>\u2014which, in some cases, can spare you quite a lot of their more exacting or punishing work.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIn the late 19th century, shortly after the patent of the telephone, the race was on to connect everyone to the phone grid \u2026 In Stockholm, Sweden, the central telephone exchange was the Telefontornet, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2014\/09\/telefontornet-stockholm\/\" target=\"_blank\">a giant tower designed around 1890 that connected some 5,000 lines which sprawled in every direction across the city<\/a>. Just by looking at historical photos it\u2019s easy to recognize the absurdity and danger of the whole endeavor \u2026 Everything that could possibly go wrong did.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Revisiting \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/edge.org\/conversation\/latitudes-of-acceptance\" target=\"_blank\">latitudes of acceptance<\/a>,\u201d a social judgment theory from the sixties: \u201cWe all have these latitudes around our beliefs, our values, our attitudes, which teams are ok to root for, and so on, and these bubbles move. They flex. When you\u2019re drunk, or when you\u2019ve had a good meal, or when you&#8217;re with people you care about versus strangers, these bubbles flex and move in different ways.
