But do they hold up against <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/29\/books\/football-and-other-books-of-the-season.html\" target=\"_blank\">the venerable backlist of football literature<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li>Today in trepidatious grammatical hairsplitting: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/volokh-conspiracy\/wp\/2014\/08\/28\/whoever-vs-whomever\/\" target=\"_blank\">whoever <\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/volokh-conspiracy\/wp\/2014\/08\/28\/whoever-vs-whomever\/\" target=\"_blank\">versus<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/volokh-conspiracy\/wp\/2014\/08\/28\/whoever-vs-whomever\/\" target=\"_blank\"> whomever<\/a><\/em>, and all the complications thereof.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/life\/education\/2014\/08\/college_course_syllabi_they_re_too_long_and_they_re_a_symbol_of_the_decline.html\" target=\"_blank\">On syllabus bloat<\/a>: \u201cToday\u2019s college syllabus is longer than many of the assignments it allegedly lists \u2026 The syllabus now merely exists to ensure a \u2018customer experience\u2019 wherein if every box is adequately checked, the end result\u2014a desired grade\u2014is inevitable and demanded, learning be damned.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Every night between 11:57 and midnight, the slogan \u201cThis Is Not America\u201d has appeared on a high-definition LED in Times Square\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/business\/currency\/logo-america?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">a message from the Chilean conceptual artist Alfredo Jaar<\/a>, who debuted the work in a decidedly more analog form back in 1987.<\/li>\n<li>Science shows that listening to your favorite songs, regardless of their genre, will generate \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/your-brain-your-favorite-song-180952511\/?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">strikingly similar brain activity patterns<\/a>\u201d of a sort that can encourage creativity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Coming this fall: a host of new books about football.
