It\u2019s such a romantic thought: that there exist out there, like undiscovered desert islands, ideas we have never even conceived of\u2026\u201d Alas, it isn\u2019t so. Ostensibly untranslatable terms like <em>hyggelig <\/em>(Danish) or <em>saudade<\/em> (Portuguese) have plenty of serviceable equivalents.<\/li>\n<li>Today in the sad obsolescence of print (or, depending on whom you ask, the ineluctable march of progress): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/books\/jacketcopy\/la-et-jc-florida-polytechnic-opens-with-bookless-library-20140820-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">a new library with no books<\/a>. At a center of higher education, no less.<\/li>\n<li>And today in seemingly unobjectionable advice that\u2019s actually terrible, vacuous, entitled, meaningless advice: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/119175\/rise-do-what-you-love-inspires-thousands\" target=\"_blank\">Do What You Love<\/a>\u201d is \u201cthe unofficial work mantra of our time \u2026 [a] secret handshake of the privileged and a worldview that disguises its elitism as noble self-betterment.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/place-beyond-words-literature-alzheimers?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">the literature of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>: \u201cBecause the full, internal experience of Alzheimer\u2019s is an account that fiction alone can deliver, it\u2019s no surprise that the go-to book for caretakers and early-stage sufferers is a novel.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFor me, there\u2019s a sure sign I\u2019ll be able to muster the maturity to it takes to make art out of my life: When I\u2019m finally <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2014\/08\/honest-writing-is-funny\/378763\/?single_page=true\" target=\"_blank\">able to laugh at a younger version of myself<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe\u2019d all like to believe in untranslatable words.
