Today \u2018time machine fiction\u2019 reigns supreme.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Before <em>Moby-Dick<\/em> there was Mocha Dick\u2014not a coffee-chocolate phallus but \u201ca real-life whale \u2026 who fought off whalers for decades before being killed by harpoon.\u201d It was a magazine story about Mocha that inspired Melville to write his novel; now, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2014\/08\/the-whale-that-inspired-moby-dick-swims-again\/378903\/\" target=\"_blank\">in a new illustrated book, <em>Mocha Dick: The Legend and the Fury<\/em><\/a>, the original whale gets his due.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/118710\/history-terms-endearment-sweetheart-sugar?utm_content=buffer4780c&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">The history of nine terms of endearment<\/a>, including such perennials as <em>sweetheart <\/em>(1290) and <em>sugar<\/em> (1930), but also some deep cuts: <em>mopsy<\/em> (1582), <em>bawcock<\/em> (1601), and <em>prawn<\/em> (1895), the last of which ought to come into vogue again any minute now.<\/li>\n<li>A manual for the first computer game\u2014\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/blog\/index.php\/2014\/08\/20\/1951-manual-to-the-first-computer-game-sells-for-4200\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Ferranti Nimrod Digital Computer<\/a>,\u201d dubbed \u201cFaster than Thought\u201d\u2014has sold for $4,200. The computer was designed specifically to play \u201ca match-stick game called Nim that was played in the French movie <em>L\u2019Ann\u00e9e Derni\u00e8re \u00e0
