Look around you. Think. <a href=\"http:\/\/the-toast.net\/2014\/08\/18\/tell-youre-honore-de-balzac-novel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Are you in a Balzac novel<\/a>? Some telltale signs: \u201cThere\u2019s a woman you\u2019d like to sleep with, so you decide to tell her an off-putting story about murder, castration, or bestiality \u2026 You play a lot of whist \u2026 You once tried to have sex with a panther.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>As a kind of language, emoji \u201care the social lubricant smoothing the rough edges of our digital lives: they underscore tone, introduce humor, and give us a quick way to bring personality into otherwise monochrome spaces.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/thenewinquiry.com\/essays\/the-conservatism-of-emoji\/\" target=\"_blank\">But are they too conservative?<\/a> \u201cWhat habits of daily life do emoji promote, from the painted nails to the martini glasses? What behavior do they normalize? \u2026 In a broad sense, what emoji are trying to sell us, if not happiness, is a kind of quiescence\u00a0\u2026 Emoji can represent cocktails, paparazzo attacks, and other trappings of Western consumer and celebrity culture with ease. More complicated matters? There\u2019s no emoji for that.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Oops. Now was not a good moment <a href=\"http:\/\/grantland.com\/features\/lets-be-cops-review-michael-brown-shooting-ferguson\/\" target=\"_blank\">to release a feature film called <em>Let\u2019s Be Cops<\/em><\/a>: \u201cthis is our only movie starring law enforcement run amok, at a moment when much of the nation is outraged that actual law enforcement is doing the same.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When a programmer inserted the classic \u201cLorem Ipsum\u201d placeholder text into Google Translate, he got some strange results. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2014\/08\/a-secret-code-in-google-translate\/378864\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cue the conspiracy
