I can\u2019t tell you how many times people have thanked me for \u2018sharing my story,\u2019 as if the books I\u2019ve written are not chiseled and honed out of the hard and unforgiving material of a life but, rather, have been dashed off \u2026 I haven\u2019t unburdened myself, or softly and earnestly confessed. Quite the opposite.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A bit of searing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/119130\/portrait-james-joyce?utm_content=buffer2007a&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">on-the-ground reporting from James Joyce\u2019s birthday party<\/a>, 1931: \u201cThe waiter brings a special wine which Joyce recommends to us very earnestly though he does not drink it himself as it is red. It is Clos Saint Patrice, 1920 \u2026 \u2018He is the only saint whom a man can get drunk in honor of,\u2019 Joyce says, praising Patrick in this way. We laugh, but he insists that this is high praise \u2026 In the apartment to which we return there is jollity. George Joyce sings; Sullivan sings; James Joyce sings.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And while we\u2019re on Joyce: \u201cI started <a href=\"http:\/\/bombmagazine.org\/article\/1000232\/portfolio-12\" target=\"_blank\">illustrating <em>Finnegans Wake<\/em><\/a> in 2009 because no one convinced me not to,\u201d writes a man who has illustrated <em>Finnegans Wake<\/em> because no one told him not to.<\/li>\n<li>The third novel in Elena Ferrante\u2019s Neapolitan series is out this month, and Ferrante\u2014a pseudonym\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vogue.com\/magazine\/article\/elena-ferrante-neapolitan-novels-origin-those-who-leave-and-those-who-stay\/#1\" target=\"_blank\">has granted a rare interview<\/a>. Is this why she guards her identity? \u201c\u2018My desk mate, with whom I had a great friendship, suggested we write a novel together,\u2019 she explains. Together, they came up with a story, and the friend wrote the first chapter. Ferrante didn\u2019t like it, and so she wrote the entire story herself, from beginning to end, telling her friend she wasn\u2019t up to the project.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Don Pardo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/2014\/08\/19\/it_didnt_come_alive_until_you_heard_his_voice_lorne_michaels_on_the_epic_legacy_of_snl_announcer_don_pardo\/\" target=\"_blank\">the distinctive, stentorian announcer for <em>Saturday Night Live<\/em><\/a>, died this week; he got his start in game shows. \u201cStaff announcer was such a prestigious job that members of the profession, in another holdover from radio, typically wore tuxedos while on the job, even though the audience hardly ever saw them and they were mainly confined to an \u2018announce booth\u2019 in or near the studio.
