Uygur\u2019s parents are skilled marblers\u2014they\u2019re the ones you see here\u2014and his video gives a sense of the patience and precision required to bring off such impressive patterns as \u201cthe nonpareil marble,\u201d \u201cthe peacock marble,\u201d or \u201cthe entwined comb marble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to make the colors \u201cfloat,\u201d you\u2019ll need a bed of viscous mucilage, known as <em>size<\/em>. You can make this from moss or seaweed extracts\u2014you know, whatever you have lying around the house. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paper_marbling\" target=\"_blank\">Once that\u2019s in place<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The colors are then spattered or dropped onto the size, one color after another, until there is a dense pattern of several colors \u2026 Each successive layer of pigment spreads slightly less than the last \u2026 Once the colors are laid down, various tools and implements such as rakes, combs, and styluses are often used in a series of movements to create more intricate designs.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Rookie<\/em> has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rookiemag.com\/2013\/01\/diy-paper-marbling\/\" target=\"_blank\">a helpful guide to do-it-yourself marbling<\/a> (no viscous mucilage required\u2014just turpentine). For truly dedicated autodidacts, there\u2019s Josef Halfer\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/files\/41241\/41241-h\/41241-h.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The Progress of the Marbling Art: From Technical Scientific Principles<\/a><\/em>, an 1894 manual that goes into exhaustive (and perhaps exhausting) detail on every facet of the art. Its distinctions are fine: Halfer reminds that the gray snail marble is not to be confused, for instance, with the common greenish-gray snail marble, or the grayish-green snail marble.
