It was not like today, when people are taking pictures every minute. We were just a bunch of girls out having fun. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/ladies-bench?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Why would anyone take our picture?<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_eye\/2014\/08\/07\/cover_by_peter_mendelsund_the_utility_of_book_covers_in_a_digital_world.html\" target=\"_blank\">Whither the book jacket?<\/a> \u201cIf, for the majority of books, the jacket no longer serves a protective function, it still shields the subcutaneous narrative metaphorically. As we spend more of our reading time in digital, disembodied, notional environments where texts lack differentiation and may easily leach into one another unconstrained, covers (and physical books in general) remain part of an anxious cultural effort to corral and contain the boundless.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Humor is dead, subtlety is dead: Facebook is now proposing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.avclub.com\/article\/facebook-add-satire-tag-automatically-renders-arti-208279?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=SocialMarketing&amp;utm_campaign=Default:1:Default\" target=\"_blank\">to append a \u201csatire\u201d tag to any shared article with a comic bent<\/a>\u2014the equivalent of winking after every joke.<\/li>\n<li>Sensory deprivation used to be a form of torture; the CIA thought it could help with brainwashing. Now\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nautil.us\/issue\/16\/nothingness\/postcards-from-the-edge-of-consciousness\" target=\"_blank\">it\u2019s a form of therapy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEscaping into video games is something that people have been doing since video games were first invented \u2026 Traditional media cannot provide the amount of hours of entertainment that games can, exercise and sports are limited by physical exhaustion and most other hobbies or activities would be impractical if pursued to the same extent \u2026 It could be argued that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2014\/08\/i-ve-probably-played-over-10000-hours-video-games-i-could-be-concert-pianist-now\" target=\"_blank\">the last two decades or so through which the video game has risen to prominence have created a boondoggle of incalculable proportions<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catching up with two subjects from a 1964 Garry Winogrand photograph\u2014that one, up there\u2014fifty years later: \u201cI never saw a photographer, or anyone taking our picture.
