Photo: Rodrigo Soldon<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>In the summer of 2011, Phyllis Rose went to the New York Society Library and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/aug\/16\/phyllis-rose-the-shelf-library-book\" target=\"_blank\">read one entire shelf of fiction<\/a>\u2014specifically, the shelf marked LEQ-LES. \u201cIn their obscurity, these books might be dull, bad or even unreadable; they might, in fact, be a total waste of her time. But she also felt certain that, should she embark on such a scheme, she would find herself on the readerly equivalent of virgin snow, for who else would have read this precise sequence of novels? \u2026 What followed was sometimes hard work and sometimes great fun. It was exasperating but also invigorating; deeply boring and yet surprisingly exciting.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Congratulations to Louise Erdrich, who\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/entertainment\/books\/271587261.html\" target=\"_blank\">won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize\u2019s distinguished achievement award<\/a>. \u201cThe Dayton prizes are meant to recognize literature\u2019s power to foster peace, social justice, and global understanding, and the distinguished achievement award is given for body of work.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou can\u2019t kill e-mail! It\u2019s the cockroach of the Internet, and I mean that as a compliment. This resilience is a good thing \u2026 E-mail is actually a tremendous, decentralized, open platform on which new, innovative things can and have been built \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2014\/08\/why-email-will-never-die\/375973\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yes, e-mail is exciting. Get excited!<\/a>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>From \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/2014\/08\/erotic-architecture-sexual-history-great-buildings\" target=\"_blank\">a guide to the sexual understanding of great buildings<\/a>\u201d: \u201cRight an\u00adgles don\u2019t attract me. Nor straight, hard and inflexible lines created by man. What attracts me are free and sensual curves. The curves we find \u2026 in the body of the woman we love.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s a radical act of self-reference. It\u2019s a paradigm-shattering instance of recursion.
