He is the object of envy, contempt, anger, disapproval, theatrical expressions of weariness\u2014but also of fascination. Has there in living memory been a\u00a0writer whom we (by which I\u00a0mean the papers, mostly) so assiduously seek\u00a0out for comment\u2014we task him to review tennis, terrorism, pornography, the state of the nation\u2014and whom we\u00a0are then so\u00a0keen to denounce as\u00a0worthless? \u2026 It&#8217;s as if, and in answer to some inchoate public need, we demand of Amis that he say things in public so we can all agree on what an ass he is.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>There\u2019s a kind of brinksmanship at work in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2014\/09\/menu-speak\/375073\/\" target=\"_blank\">the language of menus<\/a>, which use verbose descriptions to confer status to food. According to new research, \u201cevery increase of one letter in the average length of words describing a dish is associated with an increase of sixty-nine\u00a0cents in the price of that dish.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/culture\/features\/friends-in-fashion-cathy-horyn-0914\" target=\"_blank\">The subject of fashion friendships is intriguing<\/a> \u2026 I\u2019m struck by two divergent realities\u2014one conveyed by social media and one I know at close range. They are not one and the same, despite how a photo of two pals (or two enemies) might appear.
