The Fort Hamilton High School Alumni Association doesn\u2019t list him in its Hall of Fame. The libraries don\u2019t stock his books, and neither does the local bookstore. I spent thirty years in Bay Ridge as a bookish neighborhood enthusiast without ever hearing his name, until a poet mentioned it to me in passing.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Where do typos come from? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2014\/08\/wuwt-typos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Our foolish brains<\/a>, and their inveterate laziness. There\u2019s no escaping it, really.<\/li>\n<li>Which is part of why we need editors\u2014but even editors aren\u2019t good enough. What the world needs, apparently, is <a href=\"http:\/\/hechingerreport.org\/content\/robo-readers-arent-good-human-readers-theyre-better_17021\/#.U-tn9STmr-0.twitter\" target=\"_blank\">robot editors<\/a>: \u201cStudents almost universally resist going back over material they\u2019ve written \u2026 [but they] are willing to revise their essays, even multiple times, when their work is being reviewed by a computer and not by a human teacher. They end up writing nearly three times as many words \u2026 Students who feel that handing in successive drafts to an instructor wielding a red pen is \u2018corrective, even punitive\u2019 do not seem to feel rebuked by similar feedback from a computer.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s a common and easy enough distinction, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/cultural-comment\/pleasure-of-reading?utm_source=tny&amp;utm_campaign=generalsocial&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;mbid=social_twitter\" target=\"_blank\">this separation of books into those we read because we want to and those we read because we have to<\/a>, and it serves as a useful marketing trope for publishers, especially when they are trying to get readers to take this book rather than that one to the beach. But it\u2019s a flawed and pernicious division \u2026 There are pleasures to be had from books beyond being lightly entertained.
