I\u2019m sorry to Godwin out on you, gang, but I have learned something that I need to share with you immediately: despite years of slanderous rumors to the contrary \u2026<\/p>\n

Hitler was not<\/em> a vegetarian.<\/p>\n

At any rate, so argues the \u201cvegetarian historian\u201d Rynn Berry in his highly persuasive book Hitler: Neither Vegetarian Nor Animal Lover<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

To hear Berry tell it, the myth of Hitler\u2019s herbivore proclivities are not mere exaggeration, but flat out blood libel! (Sorry.) Because in actual fact, says the book, the F\u00fchrer chowed down, at least every now and again, on roast squab and liver dumplings. His vegetarianism? \u201cOne of the great myths of history.\u201d In an article for \u201cVegSource,\u201d Rynn quotes Dione Lucas, a chef \u201cwho was an eyewitness to Hitler’s meat-eating.\u201d \u201cI do not mean to spoil your appetite for stuffed squab,\u201d she wrote in 1964, \u201cbut you might be interested to know that it was a great favorite with Mr. Hitler, who dined at the hotel often. Let us not hold that against a fine recipe, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clearly, Berry is invested in this cause, but he\u2019s something of an authority on celebrity vegetarianism; he is, after all, also the author of Famous Vegetarians<\/em> and Food of the Gods: Vegetarianism and the World\u2019s Religions<\/em>.<\/p>\n

(On the other hand, Hitler\u2019s late life is said to have derived from Wagner\u2019s philosophy, and no one is questioning his commitment as a Wagnerite.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
