Show him you care\u2014with roller skates.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>An early manuscript of <em>The Sun Also Rises<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/hemingways-hidden-metafictions\" target=\"_blank\">finds Hemingway getting all metafictional<\/a>: \u201cHemingway breaks into the narrative to address the reader directly, and, in so doing, calls out the artifice implicit in the writing and reading of fiction. It is a wink at the marketplace\u2014readers want lively, lighthearted tales from abroad\u2014and alludes to the novel\u2019s central dark, repeated joke: that everything awful in life, in all of its sadness and melancholy, is better laughed at.\u201d That\u2019s so po-mo!<\/li>\n<li>It took E. M. Forster eleven years to write <em>A Passage to India<\/em>\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/aug\/08\/em-forster-passage-to-india-rereading\" target=\"_blank\">why<\/a>? Even his diary is cagey.<\/li>\n<li>A wealthy Brazilian businessman wants to own and catalog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/08\/10\/magazine\/the-brazilian-bus-magnate-whos-buying-up-all-the-worlds-vinyl-records.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">every vinyl record in the world<\/a>. (Don\u2019t worry. He has interns.)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cDuring the First World War, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2014\/08\/how-advertisers-used-world-war-i-to-sell-sell-sell\/375665\/\" target=\"_blank\">advertisers seemed to be responding to people\u2019s needs relatively quickly<\/a> \u2026 In <em>Country Life<\/em>, one of the things I noticed, being a woman, was that there were a lot of ads for guard dogs. It\u2019s things like that that start appearing throughout the war\u2014obvious and terribly poignant things, such as identity bracelets\u2014that start to be advertised very widely, as casualty lists mounted \u2026 Many of the manufacturers who produced the most eye-catching ads are still in business today.
